The star of the package isn't the drive unit — it's the EV-1 Course Computer. It combines a solid-state compass, a rate gyro, and a heeling sensor in one compact black box. That sensor package is genuinely better than what competitors put in similarly priced systems. We've tested it side-by-side against a Garmin GHP Reactor 40 in moderate following seas off the Gulf Coast. The EV-1 held course just as steadily and responded to heading deviations nearly as quickly.
The Evolution AI: Does It Actually Work?
Raymarine markets the EV-100's "Evolution AI" technology as a system that learns your boat's steering characteristics and automatically optimizes its response. Most marketing claims like that warrant skepticism. This one earns a measured endorsement.
We installed an EV-100 Hydraulic Pack on a 2023 Grady-White 275 Freedom in the spring. On the first outing, it steered acceptably but applied slightly too much helm correction in 2-foot chop, causing minor oscillation on a downwind run. By the third trip, the overcorrection was gone. By the fifth, it was holding a compass heading within 2–3 degrees in the same conditions without hunting. That's the AI working.
The caveat: the learning is tied to conditions. A boat that does most of its miles in protected water won't have the AI calibrated for offshore swells until you actually run in offshore swells. Don't expect it to adapt magically to conditions it hasn't encountered.
The p70s Control Head
The p70s is a 4.1-inch display with a rotary dial and dedicated function keys. It's not flashy. It doesn't have a touchscreen. That's fine. On a bouncing helm in spray, you want to feel a physical dial click under your thumb, not try to tap a glass screen.
Navigation is intuitive: rotate the dial to change heading in 1-degree increments, press and hold the dial for 10-degree jumps. Auto, Standby, and Track modes are one button each. The backlight is adjustable and visible at noon in direct Florida sun.
The p70s also talks to Raymarine MFDs (Axiom, Axiom Pro, Axiom 2 Pro) via SeaTalkng. Once networked, you can engage the autopilot and select a waypoint directly from the chartplotter — the autopilot follows the route without touching the p70s. Installation Reality
Plan for a full day. Raymarine says 4–6 hours for a competent DIY installer. Our techs have done it in 3.5 hours on a clean helm layout, and we've seen customers spend all day on boats with tight engine room access.
The wheel drive unit clamps onto the steering wheel using four spokes of a supplied adapter ring. It works, but it does require removing the wheel, drilling three mounting holes into the helm console for the drive motor bracket, and running cable through the console. Not difficult — just time-consuming.
The ACU-100 mounts in a protected location below deck, the EV-1 goes as close to the boat's center of motion as possible (forward, low), and the p70s fits in a standard 4.1-inch helm cutout.
⚠️ Installation Note: The wheel drive unit can slip on a stainless wheel hub if the adapter ring isn't torqued to spec and secured with threadlocker. We've seen it happen on customer boats. Follow the torque specs in the manual — hand-tight is not tight enough.
On hydraulic systems, confirm compatibility with Raymarine's actuator sizing charts before ordering the Hydraulic Pack. Undersized pump = slow, sluggish steering response in big water.
On the Water Performance
The EV-100 earns its reputation in flat to moderate conditions. On a compass heading in 1–2-foot chop, it's remarkably steady. At 18 knots on a long-range heading, we've run 40-minute legs with the autopilot holding within 2 degrees without intervention.
Where it shows its price point is in steep, confused seas. Beam seas with 3+ feet of irregular chop will cause it to hunt more than a Garmin Reactor 40 or a Simrad AP70. It corrects, but it overcorrects, then corrects again. Not dangerous — just choppier than you'd want for a long offshore run. Experienced autopilot users can reduce the rudder gain to smooth it out.
Wind vane input is supported if you add a Raymarine wind transducer to your SeaTalkng network. Garmin's shadow drive technology (it senses when you take the wheel manually and disengages automatically) is genuinely better than Raymarine's approach. Garmin's integration with GPSMAP chartplotters is tighter out of the box. In heavy following seas, the Reactor 40 holds a heading more cleanly than the EV-100.
Is that worth $950? For inshore and coastal cruising, no. For someone running regularly in Gulf Stream swells or offshore New England, yes.
