A 12V motor drawing 60 amps delivers 720 watts. A 24V motor drawing the same 60 amps delivers 1,440 watts — twice the power through the same wire diameter. A 36V system at 60 amps hits 2,160 watts.

The Motorguide Xi3 55 is another strong 12V option at around $1,299 with wireless foot pedal and GPS anchor (Pinpoint GPS). Build quality is solid; the prop design handles weeds a bit better than Minn Kota in our experience.

Battery Recommendations for 12V

One group 27 or group 31 deep-cycle battery. For a full day of moderate trolling, plan on 100Ah minimum. AGM batteries like the VMAX SLR100 are more vibration-resistant than flooded lead-acid and don't require maintenance — worth the extra $50–$80. Lithium (LiFePO4) is increasingly popular at this size: more usable capacity, faster recharge, though the upfront cost is higher.

24V Trolling Motor Systems

What It Is

A 24V system uses two 12-volt batteries wired in series — positive terminal of battery 1 to negative terminal of battery 2, then the motor's positive and negative leads connect to the remaining outer terminals. The result: double the voltage, same amperage capacity per battery, significantly more sustained power output.

Most 24V motors range from 70 to 101 lbs of thrust. This is the sweet spot for the most popular fishing boats in the country — 17 to 20 foot aluminum bass boats, bay boats in that range, and moderate-size fiberglass rigs.

The Motorguide Tour Pro 105 is worth considering at around $2,159. Motorguide's Pinpoint GPS performs well, and the prop design handles hydrilla and grass better than the Minn Kota MK prop. Where it slightly trails the Ultrex is in anchor holding in heavy wave action — not enough to disqualify it, but something to know.

Battery Recommendations for 24V

Two matched group 27 or group 31 deep-cycle batteries, wired in series. Use identical batteries — same brand, same age, same capacity. Mismatched batteries in a series bank degrade faster. We like two VMAX MR127 100Ah batteries for a solid all-day system. Your charger must be a proper dual-bank 24V onboard charger — a single 12V charger will not maintain a series bank correctly.

36V Trolling Motor Systems

What It Is

Three 12-volt batteries wired in series. This is the high end of consumer trolling motor power — 36V motors range from 101 to 112 lbs of thrust, and they are built for big boats in demanding conditions. Three batteries means more weight (150–180 lbs of battery depending on type), more connections to maintain, and a bigger dedicated charging system. That's not a knock — it's just the honest picture.

Three matched group 31 deep-cycle batteries minimum. At this level, lithium is strongly recommended. Three AGM group 31s weigh roughly 180 lbs and take 6–8 hours to fully recharge. Three 100Ah LiFePO4 batteries weigh half that, recharge in 2–3 hours, and deliver 90%+ of rated capacity versus about 50% for AGM under heavy discharge. Your charging system must be a proper 36V three-bank onboard charger.

Questions to Ask Before You Buy

What's your boat's weight? Fully rigged — motor, batteries, gear, two people. A 1,800-lb loaded rig needs very different thrust than a 3,200-lb tournament boat with a full rod locker.

What water do you fish? Sheltered ponds and small lakes are very different from exposed impoundments with afternoon whitecaps. Current is the biggest thrust killer — one knot of current roughly doubles the holding load on your motor.

How long are your days on the water? Tournament anglers running dawn to dusk need serious battery capacity. A weekend afternoon angler on a small pond can get away with a lot less.
