Garmin GPSMAP 1223xsv 12" Combo + GMR 18 HD+ Radar Pack — Product description

Garmin's combined helm package: the 12-inch GPSMAP 1223xsv chartplotter/fishfinder with the GMR 18 HD+ radar dome in one bundle. Pre-loaded Garmin Navionics+ US and Canada charts. Built-in Ultra HD SideVu, Ultra HD ClearVu, and 1 kW CHIRP sonar. 36 nm radar range, MARPA target tracking, and Garmin Marine Network for adding LiveScope or Panoptix later.

This bundle is what most mid-sized cruising and sport-fishing boats actually want when they upgrade the helm: the 12-inch GPSMAP 1223xsv chartplotter, the GMR 18 HD+ radar dome, and the US and Canada Navionics+ chart pack all in one box. Buying the three pieces separately means a stack of part numbers and the real risk of missing a network cable or a mounting bracket. The bundle ships everything pre-paired to work together out of the gate, with the same network connections and feature integration as if you'd specified each piece individually.

The 1223xsv is the 12-inch GPSMAP combo chartplotter with sonar built in. 12 inches of IPS panel at 1280 by 800 WXGA resolution, with the high-brightness backlight that holds up in direct sun and through polarized sunglasses. The processor is the upgraded GPSMAP core that handles overlay radar, multi-engine NMEA 2000 data, IP video feeds, and live sonar without the lag that older 12-inch combo units sometimes show when you stack too many features on the same screen. The xsv suffix means built-in Ultra High-Definition SideVu and ClearVu scanning sonars in addition to the 1 kW dual-channel CHIRP traditional sonar. The dedicated 2kW transducer port is also there for high-power 2D offshore work if you outgrow the included sonar capability.

The GMR 18 HD+ radar is the 18-inch HD+ platform Garmin dome included in the bundle. 36 nautical mile maximum range, high-definition target separation that cuts through rain clutter, MARPA target tracking up to 10 simultaneous targets with vector overlays, and Dual Range scanning that shows close-in and distant ranges simultaneously on the chartplotter. The HD+ platform is Garmin's modernized dome radar platform sitting above the older xHD2 domes in image quality and feature set. For mid-sized cruising boats running close-in coastal navigation plus offshore weather tracking, the GMR 18 HD+ is the right radar size: more capability than entry-level Garmin domes, more compact than the open-array xHD3 units. The dome connects to the chartplotter through the Garmin Marine Network with the included Ethernet cable.

Network connectivity is the second major reason captains pick this bundle. Dual Garmin Marine Network ports on the chartplotter let you network this unit to a second helm display, a Panoptix or LiveScope transducer for live sonar, an external sonar black box, or a second radar pedestal as the system grows. NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 cover the rest of the boat's data: autopilots, VHF radios, AIS receivers, Fusion audio, and digital switching panels. J1939 input speaks directly to heavy-diesel engine ECUs. Yamaha engine integration shows RPM, fuel burn, trim, and warnings directly on the chartplotter for owners running compatible Yamaha outboards. HDMI out feeds video to a second screen or a video distribution amp.

For chart and mapping, the bundle ships with the standard worldwide basemap pre-loaded covering coastal contours and major waterways globally. The basemap is enough for general navigation out of the box but not for fine-detail bathymetry on inland lakes or coastal reefs. Premium chart upgrades (Garmin Navionics+, Navionics Vision+, LakeVu g3 Ultra, BlueChart g3 Vision) are purchased separately based on the region you fish. Connectivity outside the boat runs through built-in Wi-Fi (ActiveCaptain app, software updates), Bluetooth (smart notifications), ANT+ (wireless sensors), and inReach pairing for satellite messaging from the chartplotter. The box includes the chartplotter, the GMR 18 HD+ radar dome, the Marine Network cable for radar-to-chartplotter connection, the power cable for the chartplotter, the NMEA 2000 drop cable, the microSD card, and both flush-mount and surface-mount hardware. Plan on a marine electronics installer for the radar mast install and the network wiring unless you have experience pulling cable through a boat.

One thing worth knowing about specifying a radar-plus-chartplotter bundle at this price point. The 1223xsv is the same chartplotter hardware as the standalone GPSMAP 1223xsv, but bundled at a price that effectively gets you the radar dome at a meaningful discount versus buying them separately. If you're already planning on adding radar within the first year of owning the chartplotter, the bundle is a no-brainer compared to phased purchasing. If you don't think you'll add radar for a few years, the standalone chartplotter saves you the radar cost up front. For most operators who fish or cruise offshore, the radar pays for itself the first night they leave the dock in fog or pull into an unfamiliar harbor at dusk, so the bundle is the right call more often than not.

Frequently asked questions

What's actually in the bundle?

The GPSMAP 1223xsv 12-inch chartplotter with mounting hardware, the GMR 18 HD+ 18-inch radar dome with mounting hardware, the Marine Network cable to connect them, the chartplotter power cable, an NMEA 2000 drop cable, the microSD card, and the installation manuals. No transducer is included (the xsv built-in sonar still needs an external transducer for the CHIRP side, sold separately based on your boat).

Do I need to buy a transducer?

Yes, the built-in CHIRP sonar needs an external transducer to work. Garmin and Airmar offer compatible transducers (transom-mount, thru-hull, or in-hull) sized to the boat. We can spec the right transducer pairing for your hull type and depth range. The Ultra HD SideVu and ClearVu features run through specific Garmin transducers that may be different from the CHIRP transducer.

What's the radar range and detection capability?

36 nautical miles maximum on-screen range with the 18-inch HD+ dome. Realistic detection on a small target is shorter (3 to 5 nm on a moored buoy, 20 to 25 nm on a ship, longer on a coastline or weather front). The HD+ platform's high-definition target separation cuts through rain clutter better than older Garmin dome radars.

Does the bundle include a heading sensor?

No. MARPA target tracking needs a heading sensor on the NMEA 2000 network to compute target course and speed correctly. Without a heading sensor you still get the radar picture, just no automated target tracking with vector overlays. If you don't already have a heading sensor, plan on adding one (the Garmin SteadyCast or similar) as part of the install.

What boat is this bundle right for?

Mid-sized cruising and sport-fishing boats roughly 28 to 45 feet running coastal navigation plus some offshore work. The 12-inch chartplotter fits most center console and walkaround helm cutouts. The 18-inch HD+ dome is the right balance of capability and footprint for boats that don't need (or have room for) an open-array radar. Smaller boats are usually better served by the 8-inch or 10-inch chartplotters with smaller radar domes.

Can I add LiveScope or Panoptix later?

Yes. The GPSMAP 1223xsv has Garmin Marine Network ports and accepts LiveScope and Panoptix transducers as separate purchases. The LVS34 trolling-motor-mount transducer is the inshore live-sonar choice, the PS70 thru-hull is the offshore deep-drop option. Either one networks to the chartplotter through the Marine Network.

Will the radar work with my older Garmin chartplotter?

Only if your chartplotter has a Garmin Marine Network Ethernet port and supports HD+ platform radars in its firmware. Current GPSMAP and echoMAP units with the appropriate networking handle HD+ radars. If you're running an older chartplotter and you want to keep the same MFD, send us the model number and we'll confirm compatibility before you order.

Will it run on my 12V system?

Yes. Both the chartplotter and the GMR 18 HD+ radar dome run on 10 to 32 volts DC, so 12V and 24V house banks are both supported without a converter.

What charts are pre-loaded?

Standard worldwide basemap covering coastal contours and major waterways globally. The basemap is enough for general navigation but not for fine-detail bathymetry on inland lakes or coastal reefs. Premium chart upgrades (Garmin Navionics+, Navionics Vision+, LakeVu g3 Ultra, BlueChart g3 Vision) are purchased separately based on the region you fish.

What's the warranty?

Garmin's standard marine electronics warranty. 1-year limited on the chartplotter, 1-year limited on the radar dome. Coverage details are on the warranty card. Garmin's customer service network handles in-warranty work directly.
