Sizing Questions That Actually Matter
What does your ground tackle weigh total?
Add anchor weight + all chain + shackles and swivel. That's your working load. Windlass capacity ratings are based on free-hanging weight in calm water — real-world conditions include current, wind, and hull movement adding resistance. A good rule of thumb: your windlass should be rated for at least 3x the total weight of your rode.
What chain size are you running?
The gypsy must match your chain exactly. 5/16" G4 and 5/16" BBB have different link dimensions. 3/8" G4 and 3/8" G7 are different. For a typical 25-foot boat with a 15–22 pound anchor and 100 feet of 5/16" chain, both the Lewmar V3 and V700 are technically sufficient. We recommend the V700. The extra 500W of motor power makes a noticeable difference when retrieving scope against current or in a chop, and the V700's auto-brake is more robust. The $250 price difference is worth it if you anchor more than a handful of times per season.
Can a windlass handle both rope and chain rode?
Yes, if the unit has a combination wildcat/capstan design. The Lewmar V700 and V1000 both handle rope-and-chain combination rode properly. The rope feeds onto a capstan drum and the chain onto the gypsy — they're separate mechanisms on the same shaft.
