Humminbird HELIX 15 CHIRP MEGA DI+ GPS G4N CHO (Head Only)
Humminbird HELIX 15 CHIRP MEGA DI+ GPS G4N CHO (Head Only) — Product description
The Humminbird HELIX 15 G4N CHO is the 15.4-inch Control-Head-Only HELIX with MEGA Down Imaging+, Dual Spectrum CHIRP sonar, internal GPS, and Humminbird Basemap. No transducer in the box, by design, so you can pair it with your existing trolling motor sonar, an Ethernet network feed, or the accessory transducer of your choice.
The Humminbird HELIX 15 G4N CHO is the big-screen HELIX you buy when you already have sonar coming from somewhere else. The 15.4-inch 1280 by 800 LCD is the largest in the HELIX lineup, with the proven keypad-driven menu system that long-time HELIX owners know cold. The CHO designation means Control Head Only. There's no transducer in the box. That's the point.
The CHO model exists for three real use cases. First, owners running a network-capable trolling motor with built-in MEGA imaging in the head can feed sonar straight to the HELIX over the included sonar port without buying a redundant transom transducer. Second, anglers who already run a HELIX or APEX network on the boat can pull sonar from another unit over Ethernet and put the HELIX 15 at a second station. Third, builders who plan to add MEGA 360 Imaging or another accessory transducer separately don't need to throw away the standard transducer that would have come bundled. You build the system you actually want.
The 15.4-inch display is the headline. On a center console where the helm has the real estate to support it, a 15-inch HELIX is genuinely transformative compared to a 9 or 10. You can split-screen MEGA Down Imaging, CHIRP sonar, the basemap chart, and a network sonar feed from the bow at the same time without any of the four panels feeling cramped. Resolution is 1280 by 800, which is sharp enough to make MEGA imagery look like the photo-style returns it's marketed as. Sunlight readability is good, the keypad is the proven HELIX layout that doesn't change with new generations, and the unit is sealed for marine use.
MEGA Down Imaging+ is the sonar tech that pulls the HELIX line forward over the older 800 kHz Down Imaging. The frequency range hits 1100 to 1200 kHz, which gives you tighter beam width and finer detail at the depths most boaters actually fish. You see fish on the bottom, fish suspended in the column, and structure transitions like rock-to-sand or vegetation edges with photo-quality clarity. Maximum depth on MEGA DI+ is 200 feet, with 455 kHz fallback giving you 400 feet of penetration when you need to go deeper.
Dual Spectrum CHIRP is Humminbird's working CHIRP sonar across the HELIX line. Two ranges, wide mode (140 to 200 kHz) for maximum scan area when you're searching, and narrow mode (180 to 240 kHz) for the highest detail when you've found a piece of structure and want to know what's on it. Switch between them on the fly with a button press. Target separation gets down to 2.5 inches at the right range, which is enough to distinguish two fish stacked on top of each other instead of seeing one fat blob.
Internal GPS plus Humminbird Basemap means you can navigate out of the box. The basemap covers more than 10,000 inland lakes plus the continental U.S. coastal waters with depth contours, hazards, marina locations, and points of interest. Add a premium chart card on the dual SD slots if you want LakeMaster, CoastMaster, SmartStrike, or compatible third-party charts on top of the basemap. Storage handles 2,750 waypoints, 47 routes, and 50 tracks with 20,000 track points, which is enough for a season of serious tournament fishing.
AutoChart Live is the HELIX feature that turns the unit into a personal cartographer. As you idle around a piece of water, the sonar feeds depth, bottom hardness, and vegetation data to the unit, which builds a custom contour map in real time. Eight hours of recording sit in the unit by default, expandable indefinitely with an AutoChart Zero Line SD card. For lakes that aren't covered well by commercial cartography, this is the feature that maps them.
Connectivity is the HELIX G4N strong suit. Ethernet for sharing sonar, charts, and waypoints across multiple units. Bluetooth for wireless control of compatible shallow water anchors and downriggers in the One-Boat Network ecosystem. WiFi for software updates and chart downloads via the FishSmart mobile app. NMEA 2000 for engine data, fluid levels, autopilot, and other vessel data. The 5-port Ethernet switch is supported for larger multi-unit installs. Optional radar dome integration is built in.
Power. The unit runs on 12V DC. Use a dedicated power run from the battery, fused appropriately, with marine-grade tinned wire sized for the run length. Don't share the power feed with bilge pumps or noisy accessories or you'll see interference patterns on the sonar imagery. The compass safe distance is short enough that the HELIX 15 fits comfortably in most helm electronics packages without throwing off magnetic compasses.
What's in the box. Control head, gimbal mounting bracket, power cable, and the install hardware. No transducer. No sun cover (sold separately). No charts beyond the preloaded basemap.
Two-year limited warranty. Same-day shipping before 3 PM ET on in-stock units. We can help you spec the right transducer for your boat if you're not sure which way to go.

Frequently asked questions
What does CHO mean? What's actually in the box?
CHO stands for Control Head Only. The box contains the 15.4-inch HELIX 15 display, the gimbal mounting bracket, the power cable, and the install hardware. There is no transducer in the box. You'll source the transducer separately based on how you want to feed sonar to the unit.
Why would I want a CHO model instead of a packaged unit?
Three common reasons. First, you're running a trolling motor with built-in MEGA imaging in the head and don't need a transom transducer at all. Second, you already have a Humminbird Ethernet network on the boat with a transducer feeding sonar to another unit, and you want this HELIX as a second station that pulls from the network. Third, you're planning to add MEGA 360 Imaging or another specialty transducer separately and don't want a redundant standard transducer in the closet.
What sonar does it support?
MEGA Down Imaging+ at 1100 to 1200 kHz for photo-quality straight-down imagery, plus Dual Spectrum CHIRP sonar with wide mode (140 to 200 kHz) for searching and narrow mode (180 to 240 kHz) for detail work. The unit also accepts ActiveTarget-class sonar from network feeds and supports MEGA 360 Imaging via the accessory transducer. No SideScan on this CHO unit unless you add a SideScan-capable accessory transducer.
Is the screen sunlight readable?
Yes. The HELIX line uses bright LCD panels designed for marine helm use. The 15.4 inches makes the screen easy to read even in glare conditions, and the matte finish on the bezel keeps reflections under control. Polarized sunglasses sometimes interact with the screen at certain angles, which is a universal LCD issue, not specific to HELIX.
What chart cards work with it?
Premium chart cards including LakeMaster, CoastMaster, and SmartStrike from Humminbird, plus compatible third-party chart cards. The dual microSD slots let you keep a chart card and an AutoChart card loaded at the same time. The internal storage already includes Humminbird Basemap covering more than 10,000 lakes and continental US coastal waters.
Can I network it with another HELIX or an APEX?
Yes. Ethernet networking is built in. You can share sonar, charts, waypoints, routes, and cursor position across multiple HELIX or APEX displays on the same network. Use a 5-port Ethernet switch if you're running more than two units. Cat5e or better cables are required for reliable networking.
Does it work with shallow water anchors and trolling motors?
Yes, over Bluetooth and the One-Boat Network ecosystem. Compatible shallow water anchors deploy and retract from the screen, and compatible trolling motors share status, position, and waypoint data with the HELIX. Pair the device once through the menu and it stays paired across sessions.
What's AutoChart Live?
AutoChart Live builds a custom contour and bottom-hardness map in real time as you idle around the water with sonar pinging. Eight hours of recording sit in the unit's onboard memory by default. Add an AutoChart Zero Line SD card and the recording capacity becomes effectively unlimited. For lakes without good commercial cartography, AutoChart Live is the feature that maps them.
How is power input? Will it interfere with my other electronics?
The unit runs on 12V DC. Use a dedicated marine-grade tinned wire run from the battery, properly fused. Don't share the power feed with bilge pumps, washdowns, or noisy accessories, because that's the most common cause of sonar interference patterns on the imagery.
Is it waterproof?
Yes. The HELIX line is rated for marine helm use and the housing is sealed against water and salt spray. Rinse the unit with fresh water occasionally if it sees heavy spray and the housing will last for years.
What's the difference between this and the HELIX 15 MSI+ G4N?
The MSI variant adds MEGA Side Imaging+ to the same HELIX 15 platform, giving you photo-quality imagery out to 200 feet on each side of the boat. This DI+ variant is Down Imaging only, no Side Imaging. If you fish open water and want broad bottom coverage, the MSI is worth the upcharge. If you fish vertical structure, drop-offs, and tight cover where straight-down imagery matters most, the DI+ is the right choice.
How long is the warranty?
Two-year limited warranty backed by the Humminbird service network.
