Minn Kota Riptide PowerDrive 55 Trolling Motor w/Micro Remote — Product description

The Minn Kota Riptide PowerDrive 55 is the bow-mount workhorse for saltwater anglers who want serious GPS control without the bulk of a tournament rig. You get 55 pounds of thrust on a 54-inch shaft, a wireless micro remote in your pocket, Spot-Lock to electronically anchor, and AutoPilot for hands-off course holding. It's built to take saltwater abuse and keep working.

The Riptide PowerDrive 55 is what saltwater anglers reach for when they want serious GPS control on a boat that doesn't need a tournament rig. It's a 12V, 55-pound thrust bow-mount with a 54-inch shaft, and it ships with a wireless micro remote that lives in your pocket. You get the parts of a high-end Minn Kota system that actually matter on the water, at a price that respects you didn't blow the whole boat budget on a three-bank charger.

It's a saltwater motor, which is the whole point of the Riptide line. The lower unit isn't just sealed and hoped for the best. Minn Kota grit-blasts the housing, coats it in aluminum to prevent oxidation, then layers powder coat over the top. We've sold these to anglers running them in Tampa Bay, the Indian River, the bays around Galveston, and the Long Island Sound. The corrosion package is what keeps them coming back.

The 54-inch shaft is the sweet spot for skiffs, flats boats, and bay boats in the 16 to 19 foot range. Bigger center console with a high bow? You'll want to step up to the 60 or 72 inch model in the same Riptide PowerDrive line. Smaller jon boat or kayak? The 54 is probably more shaft than you need. But on a typical bay rig, the 54 keeps the prop deep enough in chop without dragging when you trim up.

Spot-Lock is the feature that sells this motor. Push the button on the micro remote and the GPS holds you in place against wind and tide. It works best in current under about 1.5 knots and chop under 2 feet. Above that, the motor still tries, but it'll start hunting around the spot a little. For typical inshore fishing, holding over a creek mouth or sitting on a structure edge, it's the closest thing to an electronic anchor you can buy that doesn't make any noise.

AutoPilot does the other thing you actually want. Set a heading, and the motor steers to keep you on it while you cast. Combine that with the variable speeds from Digital Maximizer, and you can drift a shoreline at exactly the speed you want without a hand on the remote. Digital Maximizer is also why a single battery lasts so much longer. The motor only pulls the amps it actually needs at your selected speed instead of running full bore.

The micro remote is the small wireless one, not the big LCD screen remote. It does the basics well. Speed up, slow down, steer left, steer right, Spot-Lock, AutoPilot. If you want maps and breadcrumbs and waypoints on the remote screen, you'd step up to a different head unit. But most anglers find the micro is all they actually use day to day. Lanyard it to your belt loop and forget about it.

Install is a standard bolt-on bow mount. The motor weighs 44 pounds in the box, so it's manageable on a single-person install. Drill your template first, especially if you're going through gel coat, because alignment matters and you only get one shot at clean holes. Wire it with 6 gauge tinned marine cable from the battery to the bow if you've got a long run, otherwise voltage drop will rob you of thrust at the prop. The two-year warranty covers the motor, and the composite shaft is guaranteed for life.

One-Boat Network is the part that pays off if you've got compatible electronics at the helm. The motor talks to compatible sounders and chartplotters, so you can mark a spot on your screen and have the trolling motor know about it. If you're not running compatible electronics, the motor still works perfectly stand-alone. Either way, you're getting a saltwater workhorse that's built to take a beating, hold a spot, and keep you fishing.

Frequently asked questions

How big of a boat will the Riptide PowerDrive 55 push?

It's sized for skiffs, flats boats, and bay boats roughly in the 16 to 19 foot range. On a heavier center console or anything pushing 20 feet and up, you'll want more thrust and a longer shaft.

Does the Riptide PowerDrive 55 have Spot-Lock?

Yes. The Advanced GPS Trolling System is built in, and Spot-Lock is one of the buttons on the included micro remote. It holds your position against wind and current without you having to drop an anchor.

Is this motor really built for saltwater?

It is. The lower unit is grit-blasted, aluminum-coated, then powder-coated to fight oxidation, and the rest of the motor uses sealed components rated for salt exposure. Rinse it with fresh water after each trip and it'll keep working for years.

What battery do I need to run it?

A single 12V deep-cycle marine battery, sized to your run time. A Group 27 AGM around 100Ah is the typical pairing and gives most anglers a full day of fishing at variable speed thanks to the Digital Maximizer.

Is a foot pedal included?

No. This model is controlled by the wireless micro remote. There's no foot pedal in the box, and the motor isn't set up to take one, so plan on running it from the remote.

How does the wireless micro remote actually work?

It's a small handheld with buttons for speed, steering, Spot-Lock, and AutoPilot, and it comes with a lanyard so you can clip it to a belt loop or PFD. You can stand anywhere on the boat and run the motor without going back to the helm.

What's the difference between the freshwater PowerDrive and the Riptide PowerDrive?

Same Minn Kota platform, but the Riptide gets the saltwater corrosion package, including grit-blasted and aluminum-coated lower unit and sealed hardware. If you ever fish brackish or salt, get the Riptide.

Is there a warranty?

Two-year warranty on the motor, and the composite shaft is guaranteed for life. Keep your receipt and register the motor with Minn Kota after install.

Will this integrate with my fish finder?

It's One-Boat Network compatible, so it talks to compatible sounders and chartplotters. You can share waypoints and Spot-Lock destinations from the helm to the trolling motor. If your electronics aren't on the network, the motor runs perfectly fine stand-alone from the remote.

Can I run it on a 24V or 36V system?

No. This is a 12V motor and pulls a max of 50 amps from a single 12V battery. Don't wire it into a higher-voltage bank, you'll damage the motor.
