The VWC2500 is the chain-only sibling of Maxwell's rope/chain windlasses, built for the boats where the right anchoring answer is all-chain rode rather than a rope/chain splice. The VWC name calls it out: Vertical Windlass with Capstan. The chainwheel handles the 5/16" High-Test or BBB chain, and the independent MAX-grip warping drum sits above it for working a secondary rope rode, a dock line, or assisting with docking maneuvers. Chain-only windlasses are what serious offshore cruisers, commercial fishermen, and any boat carrying primary all-chain rode actually want, because the rope-to-chain splice transition that smaller rope/chain wheels handle is the part that wears, jams, and ultimately fails on long-term moorings.

One more consideration that comes up regularly on VWC2500 installs. The boat needs a properly sized chain stopper at the bow forward of the windlass to take the working anchor load when you're set. Maxwell is explicit about this in the install manual. The windlass is the chain-handling tool, not the load-bearing tool. Without a chain stopper, every surge in a chop puts shock load through the chainwheel and the gearbox, which is hard on the windlass over time and dangerous if a critical component fails under load. Frequently asked questions

What kind of chain does it actually take?

5/16 inch High-Test (HT) or BBB short-link chain. Both are common cruising chain specs for boats in this size range. Proof Coil (PC) at 5/16 has a slightly different link geometry and won't seat correctly in this chainwheel pocket. If you're running 3/8" chain you want the VWC250012V058 instead (same windlass, different chainwheel). If you're not sure what chain you have, look for the stamped grade on individual links or send us a photo and we'll identify it.

Why pick a chain-only windlass over a rope/chain windlass?

All-chain rode doesn't have the splice that rope/chain wheels need to handle. Splices wear, jam, and ultimately fail on boats spending long time on the anchor. Cruising offshore, commercial work, and any boat carrying primary all-chain rode benefits from chain-only architecture. Rope/chain windlasses make sense on coastal cruising boats that anchor occasionally and carry mixed rode for weight reasons.

Can the capstan handle a docking line?

Yes. The MAX-grip drum is designed for working three-strand and double-braid rope without snagging. Clutch disengagement of the chainwheel lets you spin the capstan independently to warp the boat or take strain off a stern line. It's not a primary sheet winch but it handles real dock-line and kedge work.

What boat size is this windlass right for?

What deck thickness will it handle?

Up to 4 inches through Maxwell's spacer tube system. The spacer sets the gap between the above-deck and below-deck halves to match your specific deck. Most fiberglass cruisers are well under that limit. Cored decks need proper bedding and backing plates.

What 12V circuit and cable size does it need?

Maxwell typically calls for a 100-amp circuit breaker on the windlass with 1/0 AWG cable for runs up to about 25 feet one-way from the house bank. Longer runs go to 2/0 AWG. Undersize the cable and the motor stalls on heavy pulls even though the windlass is mechanically fine.

How deep does my chain locker need to be?

Plan on at least 12 inches of clear drop below the chainpipe for the chain to coil cleanly. Less than that and the chain piles up against the cover and eventually jams. Deeper is better. If your locker is shallow, a chain deflector helps but won't fully solve a tight locker.

Can I free-fall the anchor?

Yes. The cone-type clutch releases the chainwheel from the gear train so the anchor falls under gravity. The cone engages progressively rather than snapping on or off, which makes the free-fall controllable. Stop the fall with the chainwheel locking pawl or with a chain stopper, not the motor.
