The RC12-12 is the bigger-chain version of Maxwell's RC12 rope/chain windlass series, sized specifically for 1/2" (12 to 13mm) short-link chain and 20mm (3/4") three-strand or 8-plait rope. The 1/2" chain spec is what separates this windlass from the smaller RC12-10 (which is sized around 3/8" chain). At a 3500 lb maximum pull, the RC12-12 is one of the higher-pull-rating windlasses in its size class, sized appropriately for boats in the 45-to-65-foot range running heavier ground tackle. This is the vertical low-profile configuration with the motor mounted below deck and a chainwheel topworks above. Free-fall anchoring is built into the design through the double cone-type brake and clutch. Cone clutches engage progressively, which gives you precise control of the chain release rather than the on/off snap of a dog clutch. The release lever lets you drop the anchor under gravity at the rate you want, and the chain stopper holds the load once it sets, not the windlass motor. For anchoring in deeper water or when the wind is blowing on, free-fall is what saves the windlass gearbox from absorbing the shock loads a powered descent would put through it. One install note worth flagging. The 12V draw on a 3500 lb pull rating is real. Maxwell calls for a 100-amp circuit breaker on the windlass circuit and 1/0 AWG or larger cable from the house bank for typical runs. Longer runs need 2/0. Undersize the cable and the motor stalls under load even though the mechanical side of the windlass is fine. Plan on a dedicated anchor windlass relay panel near the house bank rather than running the heavy cable all the way through the breaker panel. Also worth noting: Maxwell windlasses must be used in conjunction with a chain stopper to take the working anchor load off the windlass. The windlass is the recovery tool, not the holding tool. If your bow doesn't already have a proper chain stopper, plan on installing one as part of this upgrade.

What's the difference between the RC12-12 and the RC12-10?
Chain size. The RC12-12 is built around 1/2" (12-13mm) chain. The RC12-10 is built around 3/8" (10mm) chain. The 12 is higher pull rating (3500 lb vs 2500 lb), heavier overall, and sized for bigger boats. Pick the windlass based on the chain you're running, not the other way around.
What size boat is the RC12-12 right for?
Maxwell positions it for 45-to-65-foot cruising boats with heavier anchor systems. That's the sweet spot for 1/2" chain and the 3500 lb pull rating. Bigger boats step up to the HRC series. Smaller boats are usually better served by the RC12-10 or one of the RC8 or RC10 windlasses.
Is this the low-profile or the capstan version?
Low profile. The vertical configuration has the chainwheel topworks above deck without an additional capstan drum for line-handling. The capstan version (RC1212CAP12V) adds a fluted stainless drum above the chainwheel for working dock lines or kedge. Same internals, same chain spec, just the topworks layout differs.
What's actually in the box?
The windlass head and motor, on/off breaker panel, reversing solenoid, up/down panel switch, and the manual retrieval handle. That's the complete electrical kit minus the cable runs and the deck switch wiring. You add the cable from the house bank, the foot switches at the bow (if you want them), and the chain stopper.
Do I need a chain stopper?
Yes. Maxwell is explicit about this. The windlass is the rope/chain recovery tool, but it should not be holding the working anchor load while you're anchored. A chain stopper engages on the chain and transfers the load to the boat structure. Without one, the windlass takes shock loads every time the boat surges in a chop, which is hard on the gearbox over time.
What cable size do I need for the 12V supply?
Maxwell calls for a 100-amp breaker on the windlass circuit and 1/0 AWG cable from the house bank for typical runs (under about 25 feet one-way). For longer runs go to 2/0. The motor is sized for high pull and the cable has to feed the current. Undersize the cable and the motor stalls even though the windlass is mechanically fine.
Can I free-fall the anchor with this windlass?
Yes. The double cone-type clutch releases the chainwheel from the gear train so the anchor falls under its own weight. Cone clutches engage progressively, so the free-fall is smooth and controllable rather than the on/off snap of a dog clutch. Stop the fall with the chain stopper, not the motor.
What if I lose 12V power?
Use the Active Latch Ratchet System and the supplied handle for manual retrieval. The latch prevents the windlass from backwinding between strokes. It's slow, but it gets you home when the house bank is dead. The handle is in the package.
What's the through-deck hawse pipe size?
Large enough to pass 1/2" chain plus the 3/4" three-strand splice through one opening cleanly. The exact dimensions are in the installation manual and the cut template. A clean install needs a fairly substantial through-deck hole, which on most foredecks isn't an issue but is worth confirming before you cut.
Is the warranty good?
