The right marine-grade refrigerator for cruisers, houseboats, and RVs that need real refrigeration capacity (8 cubic feet) without depending on shore power alone.</p>

The Norcold N8XFL (model N8XFL) is the 8 cubic foot dual-compartment marine / RV refrigerator-freezer in the Norcold absorption-refrigeration product line. Two doors (top freezer compartment and bottom refrigerator compartment), dual fuel operation (120 VAC OR LP gas), 59-7/8 inch tall built-in form factor, and the modern black stainless exterior styling that fits the typical galley or RV cabinetry trim. The right galley refrigerator for cruisers and houseboats needing real refrigeration capacity for multi-day passages, plus RVs and trailers for the same multi-day off-grid use case.

Dual fuel operation: 120 VAC or LP gas. The N8XFL operates on either 120 volt AC shore / generator power or on LP gas (propane). When you're plugged into shore power at the marina or running the generator, the fridge runs on AC. When you're underway with the generator off, or anchored out at a remote spot without shore power, the fridge runs on LP gas burning propane in a small flame heat exchanger that drives the absorption refrigeration cycle. Switch between fuel modes at the LCD control panel - manual select or automatic - whichever gives you continuous refrigeration without thinking about it.

Why absorption refrigeration vs. compressor. Compressor refrigerators (the technology in your home fridge) require continuous DC or AC power to run the compressor motor. On a boat or RV running off battery, that means significant power draw - often 50-100 amp-hours per day on 12V, which adds up fast on extended off-grid trips. Absorption refrigerators use a small LP gas flame to drive the cooling cycle, with essentially zero electrical draw when running on gas (just a few watts to run the control electronics). For boats and RVs that spend significant time off shore power, absorption is the long-trip-friendly technology. Trade-off: absorption fridges cool more slowly than compressor fridges and have slightly less cooling capacity per cubic foot, but they don't kill your batteries.

8 cubic foot capacity. 8 cubic feet (about 7 cubic feet refrigerator + 1 cubic foot freezer) is the right capacity for typical multi-day cruising or RV use: room for a few days of fresh produce, dairy, meat, drinks, and condiments without overcrowding. For boats and RVs primarily used for weekend trips, the 8 cubic foot is more space than needed (and the smaller Norcold models save money). For boats and RVs used for week-long or longer trips, 8 cubic feet is the meaningful capacity sweet spot.

Two-door design. Separate doors for refrigerator and freezer compartments mean less cold air loss when accessing one without the other. Open the freezer door, the refrigerator stays closed and stays cold. Open the refrigerator, the freezer stays closed and stays frozen. The 2-door layout also matches household refrigerator ergonomics, which makes the unit feel more like a residential fridge and less like a basic camp box.

Modern black stainless styling. The exterior is black stainless steel - the modern alternative to the polished stainless finish that dominated the previous decade of appliance styling. Black stainless stays cleaner-looking (less fingerprint visibility) and matches the dark cabinetry trim that's increasingly common in modern boat and RV interiors. The taller door panels give the unit a more built-in residential look (vs. the obvious appliance-box look of older Norcold designs).

Eye-level LCD control panel. The control panel sits at eye-level (top of the unit, just above the doors) where the user accesses it without bending or kneeling. The LCD display shows current temperature setting, current operating mode (AC, gas, auto), system status, and any active alarms. Standard buttons handle power on/off, mode select, and temperature adjustment. Easy to read, easy to operate, no menu maze.

Automatic frost limiting. The defrost cycle is managed automatically by the unit's controller - no need to manually defrost the freezer the way some older absorption fridges required. The auto-defrost limits frost buildup on the evaporator coils so cooling efficiency stays high without manual intervention. For owners used to household auto-defrost refrigerators, the N8XFL feels familiar.

Left-hand hinge. The N8XFL ships with the doors hinged on the left side (door swings open to the right). For galley installs where the unit sits to the right of the user's typical standing position, left-hand hinge keeps the door out of the user's way during access. For installs where right-hand hinge is preferred, check Norcold's other model variants - some Norcold refrigerator models offer right-hand hinge as a different SKU.

White powder-coated shelves. The interior shelves are white powder-coated steel with front risers (a small lip at the front edge that prevents items from sliding off when the boat or RV is in motion). The white powder coat is bright (so contents are easy to see) and resists corrosion in the moist refrigerator environment. The front risers are particularly useful on boats where rough water motion can otherwise toss contents around.

Clear door bins. The door-mounted storage bins are clear plastic so you can see what's stored without opening every bin. Holds bottles, cans, condiments, and similar small items in the door space without taking up shelf space.

Door-ajar alarm with light. If a door doesn't fully close (or a passenger forgets to close one when they leave the galley), the unit alerts via an audible alarm and a light on the control panel. Useful because an open refrigerator door drains battery (when running on AC) or wastes propane (when running on gas) and lets the inside contents warm up. Catching the open door early prevents food spoilage.

Compact electrical draw on AC. Running on AC, the N8XFL draws only 3 amps at 120 V (about 360 watts). That's well within the capacity of a typical 30 amp shore power circuit and well within the output of a typical small RV or marine generator. The compressor-free absorption design means there's no big startup current spike that some compressor fridges have.

Permanent install. The N8XFL is a built-in unit - it installs permanently in a galley or RV cabinet cutout sized for the 59-7/8 H x 23-1/2 W x 24 D dimensions. Cabinet ventilation requirements (front vent + back rear vent for absorption-cycle exhaust heat) must be met for safe and efficient operation. The install instructions detail the required vent dimensions.

Frequently asked questions

What's absorption refrigeration vs. compressor?

Compressor refrigerators (the technology in your home fridge) need continuous DC or AC power to run the compressor motor. Absorption refrigerators use a small LP gas flame to drive the cooling cycle, with essentially zero electrical draw when running on gas. For boats and RVs that spend significant time off shore power, absorption is the long-trip-friendly technology. Trade-off: absorption fridges cool more slowly than compressor fridges, but they don't kill your batteries on multi-day off-grid use.

How long does it run on LP gas?

Typical absorption fridge gas consumption is around 1-1.5 gallons of LP gas per week of continuous operation, depending on ambient temperature and usage patterns. A standard 20 lb propane tank holds about 4.6 gallons of LP gas, so one tank lasts roughly 3-4 weeks of continuous fridge operation. For week-long cruising trips, one tank is more than sufficient (and the same tank is also typically used for the stove and water heater, so figure shorter total run time per tank with combined-use).

Will it cool as well as a household fridge?

Almost. Absorption fridges cool slightly less aggressively than compressor fridges (the cooling cycle is slower), but the steady-state temperatures are equivalent: refrigerator at 35-40 F, freezer at 0-10 F. The slower cooling means longer recovery time after putting warm food in - load it cold or pre-chilled when possible. For day-to-day use of refrigerated and frozen foods, the N8XFL performs comparably to a household fridge of similar size.

Can I switch between AC and gas automatically?

Yes. The LCD control panel has an Auto mode that switches between AC and gas based on power availability. If shore power is connected, the unit runs on AC. If shore power drops, the unit auto-switches to gas. When shore power returns, the unit auto-switches back to AC. Manual mode-select is also available if you want to lock the unit to one fuel source (e.g., always on gas for an extended off-grid trip).

Does it have an ice maker?

No. The N8XFL is the no-ice-maker variant. For boats and RVs that need an ice maker, see other Norcold models that include built-in ice makers. The lack of ice maker keeps the price lower and reduces the install plumbing complexity (no water inlet line required).

Which way do the doors swing?

Left-hand hinge - the doors hinge on the left side and swing open to the right. For galley installs where the unit sits to the right of the user's typical standing position, left-hand hinge keeps the door out of the way during access. For installs where right-hand hinge is preferred, check Norcold's other model variants - some Norcold refrigerator models offer right-hand hinge as a different SKU.

What's the AC current draw?

3 amps at 120 V AC (about 360 watts). Well within the capacity of a typical 30 amp shore power circuit and well within the output of a typical small RV or marine generator. The absorption design has no big compressor startup current spike, so the AC current is steady at the 3 amp level whenever the unit is running on AC.

How big is it?

8 cubic feet total interior capacity (about 7 cubic feet refrigerator + 1 cubic foot freezer). External dimensions: 59-7/8 inches tall, 23-1/2 inches wide, 24 inches deep. Plan for the cabinet cutout to be slightly larger than the external dimensions to allow for ventilation clearance and the slight additional space the trim ring requires.

What ventilation does it need?

Absorption refrigerators reject heat through the rear coils that need significant ventilation to operate efficiently. The N8XFL requires a front-bottom intake vent and a rear-top exhaust vent (the install instructions detail the specific vent dimensions). Without proper ventilation, the unit's cooling performance drops significantly. Install per the instructions and the unit cools properly.

How do I install it?

Install in a cabinet cutout sized per the install instructions (with the required ventilation cutouts). Connect the 120 VAC supply wiring to the boat or RV electrical panel. Connect the LP gas supply line to the unit's gas inlet (typically through a flare fitting from the existing LP gas distribution). Level the unit during install (absorption refrigeration requires the unit to be level for the refrigerant flow to work correctly). Total install time is typically 4-8 hours for a fresh install, less for a like-for-like replacement of an existing absorption fridge.

Does it need to be level?

Yes. Absorption refrigeration requires the unit to be reasonably level for the ammonia / hydrogen refrigerant flow to work correctly. Slight off-level (boat at anchor in mild swell, RV on an uneven campsite) is fine for short periods. Significant off-level for extended periods can cause refrigerant pooling that reduces cooling efficiency. For boats, level the unit at install when the boat is at typical resting attitude (level at rest in flat water).

What's the warranty?

2-year limited Norcold warranty. Service runs through the Norcold authorized service network in the U.S. Check the warranty document that ships with the unit for the specific terms.
