Garmin GPSMAP 1643xsv 16" Combo Chartplotter/Fishfinder GN+

The GPSMAP 1643xsv is Garmin's 16-inch combo chartplotter at the top end of the GPSMAP 16-inch lineup, sitting above the basic 1643 (no sonar) and the 1643xs (CHIRP only). The xsv suffix means built-in Ultra High-Definition SideVu and ClearVu scanning sonars in addition to the 1 kW dual-channel CHIRP traditional sonar. That covers most of what an angler or coastal cruiser actually wants out of a fishfinder without a separate black-box sonar module on the network. If you decide later you want live forward-looking sonar, the unit accepts Panoptix and LiveScope transducers over the Garmin Marine Network and shows the live picture alongside everything else.

The display is the headline. 16 inches of IPS panel with edge-to-edge glass and a high-brightness backlight that holds up in direct sun, polarized sunglasses, and the off-angle viewing you get when two people are reading the same screen from different sides of the helm. The wide viewing angle of IPS is the difference between a chartplotter that works at the helm chair and one that only the captain can read clearly. It's not a substitute for a dedicated sailing instrument display, but for a cruiser-racer who wants navigation and sailing data on one big screen, it covers the basics well. Connectivity outside the boat runs through built-in Wi-Fi (ActiveCaptain app, software updates, Quickdraw map sync), Bluetooth (smart notifications), ANT+ (wireless sensors, watches), and inReach pairing for two-way satellite messaging from the chartplotter if you have an inReach subscription. One thing worth knowing about specifying a 16-inch chartplotter at this price point. The 1643xsv is a real upgrade over the older GPSMAP 8616xsv it replaces, mostly because of the new processor and the IPS panel. Side by side, the new unit redraws charts faster when you pan and zoom, handles more network video and sonar feeds without dropping frames, and reads better in direct sunlight from the off-axis angles you actually use at the helm. If you're upgrading from an older 12-inch unit and trying to decide between this and the 1223xsv, the answer mostly comes down to helm space. The 16-inch panel sits considerably bigger in real life than the spec sheet suggests, and a 35-foot center console with a tight dash can struggle to mount one cleanly. Measure the available helm cutout first. If you've got the room and the budget, the 16-inch unit is the better long-term buy because it'll grow with whatever you add to the boat next.
