Frequently asked questions

Is the antenna included?

Yes. Unlike some Garmin radar SKUs that sell the pedestal and the array separately, the GMR 434 xHD3 ships as a complete unit with the 4-foot array already attached to the pedestal. You don't need to order the array as a separate part.

What's the difference between the 434 xHD3 and the 6-foot 436 xHD3?

Antenna length. Both run the same 4kW magnetron pedestal. The 434 is the 4-foot array. The 436 is the 6-foot array. The 6-foot gets you a tighter 1.1-degree beamwidth and slightly more range, but takes more room on the radar arch. The 4-foot is the more compact install and is the right pick for boats where arch space is limited.

How does it compare to a Fantom solid-state radar?

Different technology. The xHD3 is magnetron radar. Fantom is solid-state Doppler. Fantom adds MotionScope color-coding for moving targets (red for closing, green for receding) and has no magnetron warm-up cycle. The 434 xHD3 has higher peak power on a single pulse, which can give slightly better detection of small targets at long range, but lacks the Doppler features. For new installs most operators pick Fantom. For budget-conscious upgrades from older magnetron radar, the 434 xHD3 is a good answer.

Will it work with my Garmin chartplotter?

If your chartplotter is on the Garmin Marine Network with Ethernet support, yes. Most current GPSMAP and echoMAP units with the appropriate networking handle xHD3 radar. Can I run it on a 24V system?

Yes. The pedestal accepts 10 to 32 volts DC, so 12V and 24V house banks are both fine. Power draw is 65 watts typical, which is light enough that it doesn't measurably load the bank.

What's the actual practical detection range?

Realistic detection on a small target is shorter than the 72 nm maximum range. Expect 3 to 5 nautical miles on a moored buoy, 20 to 30 nautical miles on a ship, and longer detection on a coastline or weather front out toward the spec maximum. The 72 nm number is the on-screen maximum, not the detection guarantee.

Does MARPA need a heading sensor?

Yes. MARPA target tracking requires a heading reference from a compatible NMEA 2000 heading sensor or autopilot to compute target course and speed. Without it you still get the radar picture, just no automated tracking with vector overlays. If you don't have a heading sensor, plan on adding one as part of the install.

What's the warm-up time?

About 90 seconds from cold start for the magnetron to stabilize. That's standard for magnetron radar across the marine industry. If you want zero warm-up, the Fantom solid-state radar is the alternative.

How big a boat is this radar sized for?

Garmin positions the 434 xHD3 for 28-to-45-foot boats running serious offshore work where a 4-foot array fits the radar arch. Smaller boats are usually better served by a dome radar. Larger boats with room for a 6-foot array often pick the 436 xHD3 or step up to higher-power systems.
