Maxwell's RC12-10 windlass in the EDC (Electronic Drive Control) configuration, sized for 3/8" short-link chain and 5/8" to 3/4" three-strand or 8-plait rope. The EDC electronics package adds load-sensing motor control, soft-start, and overload protection on top of the standard RC12 mechanical platform. 12V, 2500 lb maximum pull, 4840 lb static hold, free-fall anchoring through the double cone clutch, and Maxwell's patented Wave Design chainwheel for smooth rope-to-chain transitions.

The RC12-10 EDC is the electronically controlled version of Maxwell's RC12-10 rope/chain windlass, sized around 3/8" (10 to 11 mm) short-link chain and 5/8" to 3/4" three-strand or 8-plait rope. The 1/2" chain version is the bigger RC12-12. This RC12-10 EDC slots between them for boats running the lighter 3/8" chain spec who want the modern electronic motor control rather than the standard breaker-relay drive. The Electronic Drive Control electronics package monitors motor current in real time, provides soft-start ramping to reduce shock load on the chain and the boat structure, and protects the motor against overload by cutting drive before the windlass stalls hard. For owners who anchor frequently, the EDC drive is noticeably smoother than the older relay-controlled drive and easier on the gearbox over time.

Mechanically the RC12-10 EDC is the standard RC12 platform. Maximum pull is 2500 pounds, static hold (the load the brake can hold without slipping) is 4840 pounds, chain retrieval rate is 79 feet per minute and rope at 65 feet per minute at normal working load. Those numbers put the RC12-10 squarely in the 30-to-50-foot cruising-boat range, where you're working with a 50-to-80-pound anchor, 200-plus feet of rode, and you want enough power to break a deep-set hook without screaming the breakers. The 75:1 single-stage gearbox runs quieter and has fewer moving parts than dual-stage gearboxes you'll find on competing windlasses at this size class.

The Wave Design chainwheel is patented Maxwell and is what makes the rope-to-chain transition work cleanly through this windlass. The chainwheel pockets aren't simple slots cut to match the chain pitch. They're shaped so the chain seats and releases more cleanly during retrieval, which reduces the chatter and bind that smaller chainwheels show at the splice transition between rope and chain. In practice you notice it most when you're coming back to anchor in light wind and the chain hangs straight down under the bow. With the wave-design pockets you get less jolt as the chain transitions over the wheel and into the locker, which makes for a quieter retrieval and less stress on the chain stopper above.

Free-fall anchoring uses Maxwell's double cone-type brake and clutch. Cone clutches engage progressively, not in the on/off snap of a dog clutch, which means free-fall anchoring is smooth and controllable. You drop the anchor under control with the chain stopper, not with the motor. Maxwell's Active Latch Ratchet System lets you manually retrieve the anchor with the supplied handle if you've lost 12V power. The latch prevents backwind during the recovery stroke, so you're not fighting the windlass between handle strokes. Combined with the hard-anodized black gearbox housing that's more corrosion-resistant than the older cast bodies, the RC12-10 EDC is built to be serviceable on the boat without pulling the whole unit.

Two install notes worth flagging. First, the EDC electronics package replaces the standard breaker-and-relay drive that the older RC12-10 uses. The control panel and the wiring harness are different. If you're upgrading from a non-EDC RC12-10 you'll need to rewire the control circuit, not just bolt in the new windlass. Second, the 12V draw under load is still real even with the EDC soft-start. Maxwell calls for a 100-amp circuit breaker and 1/0 AWG cable from the house bank for runs up to 25 feet one-way. Undersize the wiring and the EDC will throttle the motor below normal output to protect itself, which feels like the windlass is underperforming when really the cable is the bottleneck.

One last consideration. For boats already wired for a standard non-EDC RC12 install, the EDC variant requires swapping the control panel, the contactor block, and the wiring harness because the electronics package replaces the breaker-relay drive entirely. For a brand-new install, that's just normal first-time wiring work. For a swap-in from an older RC12-10 where the wiring is already in place, plan on a few extra hours of install labor versus the like-for-like swap you'd do with a non-EDC unit. Maxwell publishes a clear upgrade guide and the EDC harness ships with everything needed for the conversion, but it's worth knowing before you commit to the EDC variant so you're not surprised at install time.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between the RC12/10 capstan and the low-profile RC12?

Same internals and same chain/rope ratings. The capstan version adds a fluted stainless drum above the chainwheel that you can wrap a line around as a working winch. The low-profile version is chainwheel-only and sits closer to the deck for a cleaner look. If you ever need to warp the boat onto a slip or kedge off a sandbar, the capstan pays for itself.

Will it handle 1/2" chain?

No. The RC12/10 is built around 3/8" (10mm) short-link chain. For 1/2" (12mm or 13mm) chain you want the RC12/12 (RC1212CAP12V), which is the next size up in the same series.

What size anchor and boat is this windlass right for?

Maxwell positions the RC12 series for 35-to-50-foot cruising boats with anchors in the 60-to-80-pound range. That's the sweet spot for the 2500 lb pull rating and the 3/8" chain spec. Larger boats with heavier anchors should look at the RC12/12 or the bigger HRC series.

How deep does my chain locker need to be?

Plan on 12 inches of free fall below the chainpipe cover at a minimum so the chain coils cleanly. Less than that and you'll get pile-up against the cover, which eventually jams the rode. If you're locker-limited, a chain deflector helps but won't fully solve a shallow locker.

What circuit breaker and cable size does it need?

Maxwell calls for a 100-amp breaker on the windlass circuit and 1/0 AWG cable from the house bank for runs up to about 25 feet one-way. Longer runs go to 2/0. Undersize the cable and the motor will stall under load even though the windlass itself is fine.

Can I free-fall the anchor with this windlass?

Yes. The cone-type clutch releases the chainwheel from the gear train so the anchor falls under its own weight. Cone clutches engage progressively rather than snapping on or off, which is why Maxwell uses them. You stop the fall with the chain stopper, not the motor.

What if I lose 12V power at the bow?

Maxwell supplies a manual retrieval handle. The Active Latch Ratchet System holds the chainwheel between handle strokes so you don't backwind during recovery. It's slow but it works, and it's the right answer when your house bank is dead and you need to weigh anchor.

How thick of a deck will it mount through?

Up to 4 inches. Maxwell's spacer tube system lets you set the gap between the above-deck and below-deck halves to match your deck. Most fiberglass cruisers are well under that limit. If your deck is cored, plan on bedding the deckplate properly and using backing plates under the through-bolts.

Is the topworks 316 stainless?

Yes. Deckplate, chainpipe cover, pressure arm, stripper, chainwheel, and the capstan drum itself are all 316 marine-grade stainless. The gearbox housing below decks is hard-anodized aluminum for weight and corrosion resistance.

Can the capstan be used as a primary sheet winch?

No. The fluted drum is a working capstan for non-load-bearing line-handling at the bow: dock lines, fender lines, light kedge work. It's not designed for the cyclic loads of sailing winches and you'd burn out the windlass motor running it that way.
