Uflex builds mechanical and hydraulic steering plus the wheels and fittings to finish it. Match the system to your horsepower, station count, and how the boat handles.
Uflex makes a deep line of boat steering from simple rotary cable systems to full hydraulic helms and cylinders along with the steering wheels and fittings that complete the install. We stock the range so you can match a system to your engine and how you run. The choice comes down to mechanical versus hydraulic, matching the components as a set, and sizing the cable or hose for your boat.
Uflex mechanical systems like the Mach rotary and rack styles are affordable and right for most single outboards up to roughly 150 horsepower. When the wheel feels heavy at speed or you run higher horsepower or twins step up to Uflex hydraulic. Hydraulic steering takes engine torque off the wheel tracks straighter in a following sea and is the only sensible choice once the power climbs.
A Uflex hydraulic system is a matched package of helm pump cylinder and hose each rated to work together. The UP series helms pair with specific cylinders sized to your engine and horsepower so do not mix a light duty helm with a heavy cylinder. The displacement has to match or the wheel feels wrong and the lock to lock turns are off.
For mechanical steering rotary and rack cables come in set foot lengths. Measure the run from the helm to the engine with slack for a smooth bend then round up. For hydraulic run the correct hose diameter and length for the helm and cylinder so the system bleeds clean and steers without sponginess.
Running a tower or a second helm means a dual station setup with a second pump tied into the same hydraulic circuit. Plan it from the start because adding a station later means bleeding the whole system again.
Uflex offers stainless and composite steering wheels in several styles and diameters. A larger wheel turns the boat with less effort on a mechanical system while a smaller wheel suits responsive hydraulic steering. Match the wheel taper to your helm so it seats correctly.
Not sure which Uflex system fits your engine and horsepower. Tell our techs your motor horsepower and station count and we will spec the helm cylinder or cable hose fittings and wheel so it bolts up and steers right. Always confirm the horsepower rating on your engine before ordering any steering parts. Proper sizing prevents steering play and keeps the boat responsive in all conditions. Uflex parts carry clear ratings that match common outboard brands so cross checking the engine model saves time on install day. Keep spare fittings on hand for future adjustments or station additions.
Mechanical rotary or rack steering suits most single outboards up to about 150 horsepower. Above that or when the wheel feels heavy at speed go hydraulic. Twin engines and high horsepower should always run hydraulic.
No. A Uflex hydraulic system is a matched set of helm cylinder and hose with specific displacement. Pair the UP helm with the cylinder sized for your engine and horsepower or the wheel feel and travel will be wrong.
Measure the run from the helm to the engine and add slack for a smooth bend then round up to the next standard foot length. A cable that is too short binds and steers stiff.
Yes with a dual station hydraulic setup that ties a second pump into the same circuit. Plan it from the start because adding a station later means bleeding the entire system again.
A larger wheel turns the boat with less effort on mechanical steering while a smaller wheel suits responsive hydraulic steering. Match the wheel taper to your helm so it seats correctly and pick the diameter that fits your dash.
