Uflex makes a deep line of boat steering from simple rotary cable systems to full hydraulic helms and cylinders along with the steering wheels and fittings that complete the install. The choice comes down to mechanical versus hydraulic, matching the components as a set, and sizing the cable or hose for your boat.

Mechanical or hydraulic

Uflex mechanical systems like the Mach rotary and rack styles are affordable and right for most single outboards up to roughly 150 horsepower. When the wheel feels heavy at speed or you run higher horsepower or twins step up to Uflex hydraulic. Hydraulic steering takes engine torque off the wheel tracks straighter in a following sea and is the only sensible choice once the power climbs.

Match hydraulic components as a set

A Uflex hydraulic system is a matched package of helm pump cylinder and hose each rated to work together. The UP series helms pair with specific cylinders sized to your engine and horsepower so do not mix a light duty helm with a heavy cylinder. The displacement has to match or the wheel feels wrong and the lock to lock turns are off.

Size the cable or hose to your boat

For mechanical steering rotary and rack cables come in set foot lengths. Measure the run from the helm to the engine with slack for a smooth bend then round up. For hydraulic run the correct hose diameter and length for the helm and cylinder so the system bleeds clean and steers without sponginess.

Single or dual station

Running a tower or a second helm means a dual station setup with a second pump tied into the same hydraulic circuit. Plan it from the start because adding a station later means bleeding the whole system again.

Finish it with the right wheel

Uflex offers stainless and composite steering wheels in several styles and diameters. A larger wheel turns the boat with less effort on a mechanical system while a smaller wheel suits responsive hydraulic steering. Match the wheel taper to your helm so it seats correctly.
