Mount one dead vertical and a rod can walk up and out when the boat pounds. On a kayak, most anglers run these behind the seat for trolling or set them near the tank well for storage while paddling. On a small boat, the gunwale just aft of the console is a classic spot for a spare rod or a rigged line.

The rod sits butt-down in the tube and is held by the rod butt, so retention comes from the depth of the tube and the fit against your rod. If your rods have gimbal butts, they'll seat nicely. If you want a little more security in rough water, a rod leash is cheap insurance, and we'd rig one on any holder carrying a nice outfit offshore. The self-tapping hardware in the kit works for most deck positions. On a high-load spot, like a transom holder that's going to see a big fish leaning on it, we'd step up to through-bolts with a backing plate instead.
