Whitecap S-1544P Galvanized Rope Thimble, 5/16 in — Product description

A rope thimble is small, but it does a real job. This Whitecap galvanized thimble seats inside the eye of your 5/16 inch synthetic line, holds the splice open to the right radius, and takes the wear so your rope doesn't. Forged steel, hot dipped galvanized to stand up to salt.

When you splice an eye into a line, the rope bends tight around whatever it connects to, a shackle, a ring, an anchor swivel. Over time that tight bend chafes and crushes the fibers right at the load point. A thimble solves that. It's a grooved metal insert that sits inside the eye, keeps the loop open to the correct radius, and takes the abrasion instead of the rope.

This one's sized for 5/16 inch synthetic rope. It's forged steel, hot dipped galvanized, so it shrugs off salt spray and holds up on deck season after season. It measures 2-1/8 inches long by 1-1/4 inches wide. You'll see thimbles like this on anchor rodes, mooring pennants, dock lines, and any spliced eye that connects to hardware.

Splicing it in is straightforward. Form your eye around the thimble, snug the strands into the groove, and finish the splice so the line can't pull off. Do that and the connection outlasts a bare, un-thimbled eye by a wide margin. It's a couple of bucks of insurance on a line that costs a lot more to replace.

Frequently asked questions

What size rope does this thimble fit?

It's made for 5/16 inch diameter synthetic rope. Match the thimble to your line size so the groove seats the rope properly when you splice the eye.

What is it made of?

Forged steel with a hot dipped galvanized finish. The galvanizing is what lets it stand up to salt spray and keep its strength on deck over the long haul.

What does a rope thimble actually do?

It sits inside a spliced eye and keeps the loop open to the right radius. That way the thimble takes the chafe and crushing load where the rope wraps around a shackle or ring, instead of the rope fibers taking it.

How big is it?

It measures 2-1/8 inches long by 1-1/4 inches wide, sized to match 5/16 inch synthetic rope.
