Victron MPPT WireBox-XL Tr 150/85-100 & 250/85-100 Cover

Victron builds the WireBox-XL Tr for one job, and it does it well. It covers all the DC terminals on the larger Tr-model MPPT solar chargers, the 150/85, 150/100, 250/85, and 250/100, so nobody can bump a screwdriver or a finger into a live connection. On a boat that matters more than it does in a locked utility room ashore. Solar chargers on cruising boats end up in cockpit lockers, under settees, and behind the electrical panel, and those are all places where someone reaches in for a fender or a tool without thinking about the current sitting on the terminals.

Here's why it's not just a nice-to-have. The DC side of a big MPPT charger carries serious current, and the terminal screws sit exposed on a bare unit. In a general-access spot a dropped tool bridging positive to negative is a dead short across your battery bank, and that means an arc, melted metal, and a real fire risk. The WireBox takes that failure mode off the table by putting a solid barrier between the terminals and everything else in the locker.

Fitment is the thing to get right. This is the Tr version, built for the screw-terminal (Tr) models of the SmartSolar and BlueSolar MPPT line, not the MC4 connector versions. And it's the XL box, sized for the high-current 85A and 100A chargers rather than the smaller MPPT units. If your charger is a 150/85-Tr, 150/100-Tr, 250/85-Tr, or 250/100-Tr, this is your cover. If you've got an MC4 model or a smaller MPPT, this isn't the right box, so check the model badge before you order.

Installing it is straightforward, with one caveat. You snap the WireBox over the DC terminal area and it clips into place, covering the positive and negative terminals along with the wiring that lands there. The catch is that on most installs you'll want to pull the charger off the bulkhead first so you can seat the cover properly. There's no clean side-entry on a tight panel, so plan for a few minutes of access rather than wrestling it on in place.

If you're running heavy cable, mind the clearance. The XL box has room for the big tinned battery cable these chargers call for, but boaters stacking large lugs with ring terminals sometimes find the supplied screws come up a touch short once everything's stacked. Right-angle lugs or trimming the lug footprint sorts it out. It's worth a dry fit before you button everything up, especially on the 250/100 where the positive terminal is the tightest.

One more from the field. On high-vibration boats, power cats especially, the plastic retaining clips can work loose over a season. A couple of small cable ties as backup keeps the cover put through the pounding. Small thing, but it's the kind of detail that saves you finding the cover rattling around the locker six months later.

Beyond the safety, it's a cleaner install. The cover wraps the full DC terminal block, both the battery and PV landing points where the heavy cable comes in, and hides the shunt and PV wiring that usually clutters that corner. A tidy, covered charger reads as a professional job, which is exactly what you want a surveyor or a buyer to see when they open the panel.

Who needs it? Anybody whose solar charger isn't behind a locked door. Liveaboards with kids or pets aboard, charter and rental boats where guests poke around, and honestly anyone who'd rather not explain why the DC terminals on a high-current charger were sitting out in the open. It's an inexpensive piece doing an important job. If you spent real money on a SmartSolar or BlueSolar MPPT, spend the little bit more to cover the terminals.
