Victron MPPT WireBox-L Tr 150-60/70 & 250-60/70 Cover

If you've ever wired up one of the bigger Victron MPPT solar chargers, you know the DC terminals sit right out in the open. On a boat, that's not ideal. Battery and PV leads carry real current, and an exposed terminal screw in a locker or a general-access area is an easy thing to bump, short, or poke at. The MPPT WireBox-L Tr is Victron's answer to that. It's a purpose-built cover that fits over the DC terminal area of the larger SmartSolar and BlueSolar controllers and keeps curious fingers, stray tools, and loose gear away from live connections.

This is the L, or large, WireBox, sized for Victron's 150V and 250V MPPT chargers. It fits the 150/60, 150/70, 250/60 and 250/70 models. The Tr part matters. Victron builds these chargers in two flavors. The Tr versions use screw PV terminals, and the MC4 versions use plug connectors. This box is made for the screw-terminal Tr chargers. If your controller is an MC4 model, it uses a different cover, so check the label on your unit before you order.

Why bother with a terminal cover at all? On a lot of installs, the charger ends up somewhere people reach. Under a settee, in a lazarette, inside a battery box that doubles as storage. In those spots an open terminal is a genuine hazard, and a lot of surveyors and ABYC-minded riggers will flag it. Fit the WireBox and the whole DC terminal block disappears behind solid cover. It covers all of the DC terminals, not just one, so both the battery side and the PV side are protected in one shot. That's the point of it, and it does that one job well.

Install is straightforward. The box is shaped to the controller's terminal end, your cables pass through, and the cover closes over the connections once your leads are landed and torqued. Because it's the large version, there's room for the heavier battery cable you'd run on a 60 or 70 amp charger. Do your final terminal torque first, confirm everything's landed clean, then fit the cover. That order saves you pulling it back off later.

Not sure which version you have? Look at the model label on the side of the charger. A Tr unit lists screw terminals for the PV input, and the model reads something like SmartSolar MPPT 150/70-Tr or BlueSolar MPPT 250/60-Tr. That Tr suffix is your green light for this box. The 150/45-Tr in the same 150V class fits under this large cover family too, so smaller-amp Tr owners in that voltage range are covered.

One thing to be clear about. This is a cover, and only a cover. There's no charge controller in the box, no fuse, no breaker, and no MC4 hardware. It doesn't change how the charger performs or what it puts out. What it buys you is safety and a tidier looking install, which on a boat that sees guests, kids, or a survey is worth the few dollars. If you're running one of the big Victron MPPTs in a spot where hands can reach, this is the part that makes it right.

Who's this for? Anyone with a 150V or 250V Victron MPPT in the Tr screw-terminal flavor who wants the terminals shielded. Cruisers with the charger mounted in an accessible locker, liveaboards with kids aboard, and anyone building an install to survey standard. It's a small, sensible piece of the puzzle, and it's the factory-correct one for these chargers rather than a generic box that may or may not match the terminal layout.
