Victron MPPT WireBox-L Tr 150-60/70 & 250-60/70 Cover — Product description

The Victron MPPT WireBox-L Tr is a factory safety cover for the DC terminals on Victron's larger solar charge controllers. It fits the Tr screw-terminal SmartSolar and BlueSolar MPPT 150/60, 150/70, 250/60 and 250/70 models, shielding every live connection from accidental contact. If your charger lives in a locker or any spot hands can reach, this is the part that makes it safe.

If you've ever wired up one of the bigger Victron MPPT solar chargers, you know the DC terminals sit right out in the open. On a boat, that's not ideal. Battery and PV leads carry real current, and an exposed terminal screw in a locker or a general-access area is an easy thing to bump, short, or poke at. The MPPT WireBox-L Tr is Victron's answer to that. It's a purpose-built cover that fits over the DC terminal area of the larger SmartSolar and BlueSolar controllers and keeps curious fingers, stray tools, and loose gear away from live connections.

This is the L, or large, WireBox, sized for Victron's 150V and 250V MPPT chargers. It fits the 150/60, 150/70, 250/60 and 250/70 models. The Tr part matters. Victron builds these chargers in two flavors. The Tr versions use screw PV terminals, and the MC4 versions use plug connectors. This box is made for the screw-terminal Tr chargers. If your controller is an MC4 model, it uses a different cover, so check the label on your unit before you order.

Why bother with a terminal cover at all? On a lot of installs, the charger ends up somewhere people reach. Under a settee, in a lazarette, inside a battery box that doubles as storage. In those spots an open terminal is a genuine hazard, and a lot of surveyors and ABYC-minded riggers will flag it. Fit the WireBox and the whole DC terminal block disappears behind solid cover. It covers all of the DC terminals, not just one, so both the battery side and the PV side are protected in one shot. That's the point of it, and it does that one job well.

Install is straightforward. The box is shaped to the controller's terminal end, your cables pass through, and the cover closes over the connections once your leads are landed and torqued. Because it's the large version, there's room for the heavier battery cable you'd run on a 60 or 70 amp charger. Do your final terminal torque first, confirm everything's landed clean, then fit the cover. That order saves you pulling it back off later.

Not sure which version you have? Look at the model label on the side of the charger. A Tr unit lists screw terminals for the PV input, and the model reads something like SmartSolar MPPT 150/70-Tr or BlueSolar MPPT 250/60-Tr. That Tr suffix is your green light for this box. The 150/45-Tr in the same 150V class fits under this large cover family too, so smaller-amp Tr owners in that voltage range are covered.

One thing to be clear about. This is a cover, and only a cover. There's no charge controller in the box, no fuse, no breaker, and no MC4 hardware. It doesn't change how the charger performs or what it puts out. What it buys you is safety and a tidier looking install, which on a boat that sees guests, kids, or a survey is worth the few dollars. If you're running one of the big Victron MPPTs in a spot where hands can reach, this is the part that makes it right.

Who's this for? Anyone with a 150V or 250V Victron MPPT in the Tr screw-terminal flavor who wants the terminals shielded. Cruisers with the charger mounted in an accessible locker, liveaboards with kids aboard, and anyone building an install to survey standard. It's a small, sensible piece of the puzzle, and it's the factory-correct one for these chargers rather than a generic box that may or may not match the terminal layout. If you're spec'ing out a new solar install, add it to the cart alongside the charger so the terminals are covered from day one instead of left open until you get around to it.

Frequently asked questions

What does the MPPT WireBox-L Tr actually do?

It's a safety cover for the DC terminals on your Victron MPPT solar charger. It covers all of the DC terminals at once, both the battery side and the PV side, so nobody can accidentally touch a live terminal screw. Handy when the charger is mounted somewhere people can reach.

Which Victron chargers does this box fit?

The large Tr WireBox is made for the screw-terminal SmartSolar and BlueSolar MPPT 150/60, 150/70, 250/60 and 250/70 chargers. The 150/45-Tr in the same 150V class fits this cover family as well.

What does the Tr in the name mean?

Tr is the screw-terminal version of the Victron MPPT chargers. Victron makes these controllers with either screw PV terminals (Tr) or MC4 plug connectors. This box is built for the Tr screw-terminal chargers.

Will it fit the MC4 version of my charger?

No. The MC4 chargers use plug connectors and a different cover. This one is only for the Tr screw-terminal models. Check the label on your charger before you order, and match the Tr designation.

What does the L stand for?

L is the large size. It's sized for the bigger 150V and 250V Victron MPPT chargers rather than the smaller units, so there's room for the heavier battery cable you'd run on a 60 or 70 amp charger.

Does this include the solar charge controller?

No. This is the cover only. There's no charge controller, no fuse, and no breaker in the box. It's an accessory that fits over a charger you already have.

Is the WireBox a fuse holder?

No. It's purely a terminal cover for safety. It doesn't add fusing or overcurrent protection, so you'd still fuse the battery and PV circuits separately as your install calls for.

Why would I want one on a boat?

On a lot of installs the charger ends up in a locker, a lazarette, or a battery box that also gets used for storage. Those are general-access spots where an open terminal is a real hazard. The cover keeps live terminals out of reach and helps an install pass survey.

Does it fit both BlueSolar and SmartSolar?

Yes, as long as it's a Tr screw-terminal model in the 150V or 250V class. Both the BlueSolar and SmartSolar Tr chargers in those voltages use this large WireBox.

Do I need to remove my wiring to install it?

No. Land and torque your cables to the terminals first, confirm everything's clean, then fit the cover over the terminal area. Doing the torque first saves you taking the cover back off later.
