Rack and pinion steering gives you direct, low-effort turning at the wheel, and it holds a course with very little slop. On an 18 to 24-foot center console or runabout, that's exactly the feel you want.

So why rack and pinion? It comes down to effort and feedback. A pinion gear engages the pre-assembled rack inside the cable, and that geometry cuts down the force you need at the wheel. Turning stays smooth even with a decent-size outboard hung off the transom. You'll also notice less backlash, which is the little bit of dead play you feel when you change direction. Less backlash means the boat responds the moment you turn, and that matters when you're threading a tight inlet or backing into a slip.

The cable on this one is 12 feet, measured along the full routing path from the helm down through the bilge and back to the engine. Before you order, run a string along the exact path the cable will take, dash to tilt tube, and add for every bend. This is the step people skip and regret. On boats over about 22 feet with the console mounted forward and a long transom run, 12 feet can come up short. Measure twice. If your run is longer, step up to a longer cable rather than forcing a tight route.

The X34 bezel mounts at 90 degrees, which is the setup for boats with minimal clearance behind the dash. It drops the helm output straight down instead of back, so you don't need a lot of depth behind the panel. You'll cut a clean hole in the dash for the bezel and bolt it through. Take your time getting the hole square. A misaligned bezel puts the rack off angle and you'll feel it as binding when the wheel turns. Once it's set right, the action is smooth lock to lock.

Routing the cable is where a good install earns its keep. Keep your bends gentle, nothing tighter than about an 8-inch radius, and aim for no more than three or four bends total on the run. Sharp turns make the steering stiff and wear the cable out early. Secure the cable every 18 to 24 inches with clamps so it can't vibrate against the hull liner and chafe. A cable that's clamped down and gently routed will steer light for years.

Maintenance is simple, but don't ignore it, especially in salt water. Hit the rack with fresh grease through the access port about once a season. Boaters who skip it start seeing corrosion and stiffness after three or four seasons, and that's an avoidable repair. If you're running a higher-output outboard, up past 150 horsepower, add a support bracket at the rack mount to take the load off the cable. Do that and this steering stays tight well past 500 hours of use. When play does eventually creep in, replace the cable assembly rather than trying to adjust it. That's the honest fix, and it's not expensive.

This kit fits the boats most of us actually run: center consoles, bay boats, runabouts, and aluminum fishing rigs in the 18 to 24-foot range with a single outboard.
