Uflex Corse Boat Steering Wheel, 13.8 in Black, 3/4 in Taper

The Uflex Corse is one of those helm wheels that just works. It fits the 3/4 inch standard taper shaft you'll find on the vast majority of mechanical and hydraulic steering systems, and at 13.8 inches across it's right in the sweet spot for a lot of boats. Black soft-touch grip, black aluminum spokes, and it comes with the hub and center cap in the box. So you're not chasing down extra parts before you can get it bolted on.

We reach for this wheel a lot on 18 to 24 foot bowriders, center consoles, and runabouts where the helm is a seated station and you want direct, honest steering feel. It's clean looking without being flashy. Nothing about it screams for attention, and that's kind of the point. You bolt it on, it looks like it belongs, and you get back to running the boat.

The grip is where you notice the quality. That soft-touch PVC has a little give to it, so it's comfortable on a long day and easy to hold with one hand while you reach for the throttle with the other. If you run open in the rain a lot, some folks like to add a wrap of grip tape for extra bite when everything's wet, but for most helm stations under a hardtop or in a console the grip is plenty.

Fitment is the standard 3/4 inch tapered shaft, so it drops onto most mechanical cable systems and hydraulic helms alike. Snug the retaining nut down to around 20 foot-pounds and you're set. Don't go gorilla on it. If you're swapping onto a helm from a different manufacturer, check that your existing center cap seats correctly, since cap threads can vary between columns. On a rough-running boat it's worth a dab of thread locker on the nut so it doesn't back off in the chop.

What it's not built for: a big standing helm on a 28 foot express cruiser where you're steering from your feet and want a large-diameter wheel to lean into. At 13.8 inches the Corse is a mid-size wheel, and it shines on smaller helms where dash space is tight and you want quick, responsive turns lock to lock. If you're on a big cruiser and want a 15 or 16 inch wheel, this isn't the one. On the boats it's made for, though, the size is just right.

The black finish looks sharp against a white dash or a dark console alike. Like any black gear that lives outside, it appreciates a rinse after a saltwater day and a cover or a spot out of constant sun when you can manage it, which keeps the color deep for years instead of hazing out early. The aluminum spokes are light and stiff, so there's no flex or vibration coming back through the wheel when you're trimmed out and running.

Uflex has been building steering gear for boats for a long time, and it shows in the little things here. The hub is machined to seat clean on the taper, the cap finishes the center off so there's no exposed nut staring back at you, and the whole thing feels like a piece, not a parts-bin assembly. For a straightforward helm wheel that fits the standard taper and looks good doing it, the Corse is an easy call.

A few practical notes from the dock. If you're replacing a tired old wheel, this is close to a bolt-for-bolt swap on any 3/4 inch taper helm, so you can usually do it in the slip with nothing more than a socket and a little patience. Keep the taper and the hub bore clean and dry when you seat it, since grit or old grease on the shaft is what causes a wheel to sit crooked or wobble. And once it's on, give the nut a check at the start of each season along with the rest of your steering. A wheel that's snug and true is one less thing to think about when you're threading an inlet in a following sea. That's really what you want from a helm wheel: it disappears, and you just drive.
