Taylor Made 34" Pontoon Boat Helm Stand Side Console, Champagne

If you're rigging or refreshing a pontoon or a side-console skiff, the helm stand is the piece that ties the whole cockpit together. Taylor Made builds this 34-inch console to take that job seriously. The frame is rotationally-molded marine grade polyethylene, so it's one solid piece with no seams to split and no wood core to rot. That matters. A steering station lives right in the spray and the sun, and the part that fails first on a cheap console is usually the particleboard hiding under the vinyl. There's none of that here.

The console measures 34 inches tall, 34 inches long, and 26 inches wide, which puts the wheel and your gauges at a comfortable standing or leaning height on most pontoons and bay boats in the 20 to 24 foot range. It floor-mounts flat to the deck. The champagne marine-grade vinyl is wrapped over mildew-resistant polyurethane foam and stitched with polyester UV-resistant thread, so the seams hold up to seasons of sun instead of chalking and letting go. Aluminum seat hinges and stainless steel staples and fasteners round it out. Nothing on this console is going to rust a brown streak down your gelcoat.

There's usable storage molded right into the base, which is a bigger deal than it sounds on a boat where every dry cubic foot counts. Life jackets, a tackle bag, dock lines, the stuff that otherwise slides around the deck. The rotomolded walls wipe clean when something spills, and there's no carpet or fabric liner in there to hold water and start smelling. The face of the console gives you a flat, drillable area for your steering helm, a gauge or two, switches, and a 12-volt outlet, so you can lay out a clean dash instead of fighting for space. Plan your cutouts before you drill and you'll end up with a helm that looks factory-built.

A couple of things we tell every customer before they bolt one down. First, if your deck is thin fiberglass, back the mounting bolts with a quarter-inch backing plate or a set of fender washers. The rotomolded base is strong, but you're spreading the load of a person leaning on the wheel, and you don't want the fasteners working loose in a chop. Second, if your floor isn't dead flat, shim the base with a thin strip of marine board before you torque it down so it doesn't flex. Run a bead of marine sealant under the base too. It keeps the floor gasket dry and stops the slow weep that can show up after a season or two in salt water.

Height-wise, 34 inches is a true standing console. On a low-freeboard 16-foot jon boat it can feel tall and crowd a narrow cockpit, so measure your layout first. On a pontoon, a bay boat, or a 20-plus-foot side-console skiff it sits right where you want it. If you like to run seated, a lot of folks pair it with a 6-inch pedestal spacer to dial in the exact height. The champagne color is a light, warm neutral that works with almost any interior. Just know that lighter vinyls show dust and mildew sooner than dark colors, so a wipe-down with a marine vinyl cleaner every few trips keeps it looking sharp.
