TACO ShadeFin Mini w/Black Fabric - Bag & Round Rail Mount Kit

If your bass boat, bay boat, or center console left the factory with no shade, the ShadeFin Mini is one of the simplest fixes out there. It's a compact, powder-coated aluminum arm with a WeatherMAX 3D fabric top that throws a 60 by 38 inch patch of shade wherever you point it. This kit, part number T10-4000-17, comes with the black top, a storage bag, and TACO's round rail mount. So you've got everything you need to clamp it to a rail and get out of the sun the same afternoon it shows up.

What makes the Mini work is the range of movement. The height adjusts from 36 to 52 inches, and the arm swings through nearly unlimited angles. So as the sun tracks across the sky, you just reposition the top instead of chasing shade around the deck. Anglers like it because it covers the casting deck without the permanent footprint of a T-top or bimini. Families like it because it folds down to 38 by 6 by 5 inches and drops into the included bag when the day's done. It's just as at home on a kayak, a skiff, or a pontoon rail as it is on a bay boat.

The round rail mount in this kit clamps onto 7/8 to 1 inch outside-diameter tubing, which covers most factory rails, grab rails, and leaning-post frames. One tip from experience: the clamp can work loose on smooth anodized rail after a few months of pounding, so a wrap of rubber rigging tape under the clamp or a dab of thread locker on the set screws keeps it put. On some rails you'll want to drill for the set screws to lock it down for good. Measure your tube's outside diameter before you order so you know the mount matches. Construction is what you'd expect from TACO. The WeatherMAX 3D fabric carries a UPF 50-plus rating, the top of the sun-protection scale, and it sheds spray and resists mildew. One honest note on the black top: dark fabric shows salt haze and fades a little faster than lighter colors, and in humid climates it can spot with mildew if you bag it wet. Let it dry before you stow it and it'll stay looking right for years.

A few things to keep in mind so it does what you want. The Mini is exactly that, mini. It shades a person or two, not the whole cockpit, and it can sag if you try to span a wide beam without support. On boats over about 28 feet, a lot of owners run it alongside an existing hardtop or bimini to fill in aft coverage rather than as the only shade. It also isn't a foul-weather structure. Above 10 or 12 knots of wind you'll want to fold it down. But for a quiet anchorage, a fishing flat, or a pontoon deck on a hot afternoon, it does the one job it's built for and does it well. And if you need to cover a bigger area, you can cluster two or three Minis together across the boat.
