This is TACO Metals marine lumber, a 24 by 27 inch sheet of Arctic White high-density polyethylene at a full half inch thick. If you've ever pulled up a rotted plywood hatch or watched a painted seat base peel after two seasons, this is the fix. It's solid plastic all the way through. No wood core, no laminate, nothing to soak up water and swell.

Boaters reach for this stuff when they want a part that outlasts the boat. Hatch covers, livewell lids, bait boards, tackle station tops, step pads, battery trays, small seat bases, and backing plates behind cleats and rod holders. Cut a piece, drill it, bolt it down, and forget about it. It doesn't rot, it doesn't delaminate, and it won't splinter under bare feet in the cockpit.

Why plastic instead of marine plywood or teak? Cost and upkeep, mostly. Wood needs sealing, screws back out as it swells and shrinks, and one deep gouge lets water into the core. This board skips all of that. It's the same density front to back, so a scratch is just a scratch and never the start of rot. For anyone tired of rebuilding the same soft hatch every few seasons, that peace of mind is the whole point.

The half inch thickness is the sweet spot for most cockpit work. It's stiff enough to stand on its own as a hatch or a small shelf, and heavy enough that it won't drum or rattle underway. On spans wider than about 18 inches you'll want a little support underneath. For a full 24 to 27 inch hatch, run a length of aluminum angle across the back and the panel stays flat for good.

It machines like a dense hardwood, so your regular shop tools do the job. Carbide-tipped blades give the cleanest cut. Keep the feed rate up, because if you go too slow the friction heat can start to melt and gum the edge. Route the corners, sand them smooth, and you've got a finished-looking part with no painting or sealing needed. The surface is non-porous, so a wipe with a rag brings it back to clean. Fish blood, sunscreen, bait slime, none of it soaks in.

Fasteners matter with polyethylene. The material is slick and it doesn't grab threads the way wood does. Pre-drill every hole and use number 10 stainless self-tapping screws with fender washers to spread the load. Standard wood screws tend to pull out over time. If you're bonding it, skip the usual polyurethane marine sealants, because they don't stick to this plastic. Use a polyethylene-specific adhesive made for the job.

Arctic White is the classic look and it matches most gelcoat. Like any white polymer left in full sun, it'll want a little care over the years. A yearly wipe with a UV protectant keeps it bright and slows any weathering on fully exposed installs. Down in a console or under a leaning post it'll look new for a very long time with no attention at all.

One honest note on cutting boards and bait tables. This makes a great one, but a sharp fillet knife will score the surface over time. A lot of folks drop a thin removable cutting mat on top and keep the panel itself pristine. If you're building a livewell lid, seal the cut edges with butyl tape rather than silicone for a leak-free fit that you can still service later.
