Why half-inch? It's the sweet spot for most onboard projects. Thick enough to stay rigid as a lid or a mounting panel and to hold a screw with real bite, but still light and easy to handle and cut. For big spans you'd step up in thickness or add support, and for small trim pieces you could go thinner, but half-inch covers the vast majority of the jobs a sheet this size gets used for.

Mounting is straightforward if you respect one thing. This is plastic, and it moves a little with temperature. Fasten it with stainless screws, and back them with fender washers so the head can't pull through or crack the sheet as it flexes. Don't lag a heavy panel straight into fiberglass and call it done, because that's how you end up with stress cracks down the road. For a clean, removable install, bed the panel on butyl tape or a quality marine sealant rather than silicone. And on any lid or shelf that spans more than a foot or so, give it full perimeter support. Half-inch HDPE is stiff, but it isn't a structural beam, and an unsupported span will flex over time.

And there's the maintenance angle, which is really no maintenance at all. No sanding and re-varnishing every spring. No priming and painting. No treating the end grain, because there isn't any. Fresh water and mild soap handle just about everything, and stubborn marks come off with a plastic-safe cleaner. You install it once and mostly forget about it, which is exactly what you want out of a part that lives outdoors and gets wet for a living.

So who's this for? Anybody rebuilding tired wood on a center console, refreshing a leaning post, or fabricating custom accessories for a boat in the 20 to 30 foot range. It's ideal stock for a weekend project and tough enough for a full rebuild. Just remember what it isn't. It's a working surface and panel material, not a load-bearing structural member, so support it properly and it'll outlast the boat around it.
