Springfield 9-Inch Fixed Boat Seat Pedestal, Locking Swivel

Springfield Marine built this fixed-height pedestal for boaters who want a seat that sits at a set, comfortable height and stays put. It's a 9-inch post in 2-7/8-inch diameter, turned from anodized aluminum, and it ships with the locking Trac-Lock swivel already fitted up top. That means you get a seat that spins a full turn when you want to swing around and face the cockpit, then locks down solid when you're running or working a line.

Springfield calls this their Second Generation pedestal, and the whole line leans on cast, anodized aluminum for the strength-to-weight that marine seating needs. Aluminum keeps the post light enough that you're not adding real weight up high, and the anodizing seals the surface against the salt and UV that chew up bare metal. It's the same material story behind why these pedestals keep working season after season on hard-used boats.

The pedestal carries an ABYC Code H-31 AD rating. If you're new to the standard, that's the American Boat and Yacht Council spec covering how boat seats and their mounts are supposed to hold up under real loads. It's the kind of detail an insurance surveyor likes to see, and it's a good sign the base and post were engineered to take the twisting and shock a seat sees underway. This one suits a helm seat, a companion seat, or a table pedestal on center consoles, bay boats, aluminum fishing boats, and pontoons where a fixed 9-inch height works for the layout. Because the height is fixed, you're setting the seat once and living with it, so measure your seated eye level at the helm before you commit. Nine inches of post plus the swivel and your seat base gives you a low-to-mid mounting height that a lot of skiffs and utility boats are built around.

The Trac-Lock swivel is the part people care about. It rotates a full 360 degrees so you can turn to talk to the crew, rig a line, or step out of the seat without climbing over an armrest. When it's engaged, the lock holds the seat facing forward so it isn't spinning on you in a following sea. Keep the lock pin fully seated when you're loading it up, because a partially engaged lock can slip under a heavy person leaning hard into a turn.

Installation is straightforward if your deck is ready for it. The post drops into a matching floor base and the whole assembly bolts down. The 2-7/8-inch diameter wants a clean, level cutout so the base sits flat, and a base plate that isn't dead level is the usual reason a post binds or rocks. If your seat base uses a different bolt circle than the pedestal top, you may need an adapter plate to marry the two. It's worth reinforcing the deck under the mount beyond the bare minimum. The H-31 rating assumes the structure under it can carry the load, and a little extra backing plate or plywood doubler keeps the whole seat from flexing over time.

If you run in salt, give the swivel a little love. A shot of marine grease on the lock mechanism a few times a season keeps it turning freely and keeps the pin from stiffening up. The anodized finish shrugs off spray and does a good job resisting corrosion, but like any aluminum part living outdoors, a rinse after a salty day and an occasional wipe-down go a long way. Do that and this pedestal will outlast a couple of seat cushions.
