If you're rigging a fresh helm seat or replacing a tired pedestal that's gone wobbly, this is the kind of part you want to get right the first time. The Springfield Second Generation fixed-height pedestal is a 12-inch post with a 2-7/8-inch diameter, machined from anodized aluminum so it shrugs off spray and sun the way a marine part should. It ships with a non-locking Trac-Lock slide and swivel, so once your seat is bolted on it slides fore and aft to dial in legroom and spins a full circle to face the gunwale, the cooler, or whoever's telling the fish story.

Here's how the pieces work together. The post drops into your base and locks at 12 inches. The Trac-Lock plate mounts to the bottom of your seat, then clicks onto the top of the post. From there you get two motions. The slide moves the seat forward and back a few inches so you can reach the wheel or step back from it, and the swivel turns the seat a full 360 degrees so you're not craning your neck to work a rod or grab a line. It's a clean system most boaters can install in an afternoon with basic hand tools.

To actually meet H-31 in your boat, back the base with a solid plate under the deck. A 6-by-6-inch backing plate is a good rule of thumb, and it keeps the mounting bolts from working loose or crushing the deck core over time.

A word on fitment. The 2-7/8-inch post is the larger of the two common sizes, so it wants a base and floor flange sized for 2-7/8, not the skinnier 2-3/8 pattern. Trying to force it into an undersized base means machining you don't want to do on a Saturday. If you're on an aluminum hull, bed the base to the deck with a quality marine sealant so the joint can't trap water and start to corrode at the weld. Ten minutes of prep there buys you years.

The non-locking swivel is exactly that. It spins free, which is great at the dock and around a fishing deck. In a real seaway it'll let the seat rotate on its own, so plenty of offshore guys add a simple set screw or step up to a locking version if they run big water often. Keep the slide clean too. On beach-launched boats especially, sand works into the track and the slide gets stiff after a couple of seasons, so a quick rinse and a shot of dry lube keeps it gliding. Pair it with a standard 20 to 24-inch swivel seat for the steadiest feel, since narrower seats can feel tippy on the slide.
