Sierra Seloc Johnson/Evinrude Outboard Repair Manual

Sierra's 18-01308 is the Seloc repair manual covering Johnson and Evinrude outboard motors built between 1973 and 1991. That's nearly two decades of two-stroke powerheads in one book, from the little kickers up through the mid-range motors that pushed a whole generation of fishing boats. Inside you get step-by-step repair procedures, exploded diagrams, maintenance schedules, tune-up specs, and troubleshooting charts written for the person actually turning the wrenches.

This is a bench manual, plain and simple. If you keep an older Johnson or Evinrude running yourself, it walks you through the jobs you'll actually face over a season. Carburetor rebuilds, ignition timing, water pump and impeller service, lower unit work, and the tune-up steps that keep an old two-stroke starting on the first or second pull. It's the reference you reach for before you pull a powerhead, not after.

The manual is thinner on the later 1989 and up V4 crankcase seal work, and it doesn't carry full wiring diagrams for the 1990 to 1991 models with optical ignition. For those, cross-reference the factory service bulletins. A few torque specs on lower unit work aren't spelled out either, so keep a factory parts catalog handy for the final numbers. And if you're running a big 150 horse and up V6 powerhead, this book covers it but doesn't go as deep as it does on the smaller motors.

One practical note from the shop. It's paper, and two-stroke oil and gas will soak into paper and tear it fast once your hands are dirty. Slide the pages you use most into a plastic sleeve, or laminate them, and the book will last for years on the bench. The photos run a little low on contrast too, so a good work light helps when you're trying to pick out a small part in a diagram.

Think of it as part of your winter routine too. Come haul-out, the maintenance section walks you through fogging the cylinders, servicing the water pump, changing the lower unit oil, and stabilizing the fuel system so the motor fires up cleanly in spring. Do that every year and an old Johnson or Evinrude will outlast boats twice its age.

Bottom line, if you own an older Johnson or Evinrude and you'd rather fix it than pay someone else to, this is cheap insurance against a bad weekend.
