When the charge light flickers on a Mercruiser stern drive, the alternator is usually the first thing we check. The Sierra 18-5966-1 is the part that puts that boat back on the water. It's a 55 amp, 12 volt marine alternator with a single-groove pulley and a black housing, built as a direct replacement for the charging unit on a lot of Mercruiser stern drive engines.

How do you know the alternator is the problem in the first place? Install is straightforward on most older Mercruiser stern drives. It bolts to the original alternator bracket and wires up the same way. On newer engines that run everything through an engine control module, take a minute to confirm your wiring before you button it up, because the harness and regulator arrangement changed over the years.
