Shadow-Caster SCM-CL Great White Surface Mount LED Courtesy Light

Shadow-Caster built the SCM-CL to solve a small but real problem. You want a little light in the cockpit or down a companionway step, and you want it to look like it belongs there, not like an afterthought bolted to the fiberglass. This is a surface-mount LED accent light in Shadow-Caster's Great White color, shining through a clear lens for a clean, bright output. It's small, it's sealed to IP67, and it sips power. 60 milliamps at 12 volts. That's nothing on a house bank.

The detail we like most is what's in the box. Every SCM-CL ships with two covers, one white and one black, plus the mounting hardware. So you pick the one that matches your boat. White cover on a white gelcoat gunwale and it nearly disappears when it's off. Black cover on a dark hardtop or a black powder-coated rail, same thing. You're not stuck with whatever color the factory felt like shipping. And if you're running these in a humid climate where a clear lens can gather a little condensation, the black cover is the one longtime owners tend to reach for anyway.

Electrically it's easy to live with. The SCM-CL runs anywhere from 10 to 30 volts DC, so it drops straight into a 12-volt boat or a 24-volt system with no converter. Current draw is a flat 60 milliamps, which means you can wire a whole row of them off a modest circuit and never think about it. We'd still run each circuit through a small inline fuse, 1 amp is plenty, and use 18-gauge tinned marine wire so the connections survive a few seasons of salt air. One thing worth knowing up front. The light isn't dimmable on its own, and it doesn't love cheap PWM dimmers. If you want to dim a bank of these, use a quality marine dimmer rated for LED loads or you may see flicker.

Installation is surface mount, which keeps it simple. No big hole saw, no back-box to bury in a locker. You drill the small screw holes, run the two wires, seal it, and you're done. A couple of field notes from people who've put a lot of these in. Pre-drill your screw holes and use a backing plate or at least a solid bite of material, because the mounting screws can strip out in thin fiberglass. And on a curved surface like a transom or a rounded gunwale cap, lay a bead of marine sealant behind the base. IP67 handles spray and rain all day, but a mount that isn't fully bedded on a curve is where water eventually finds its way in. Get the bedding right and these hold up on a transom, in the weather, year round.

Where do they go? Anywhere you want a little clean light without glare in your eyes. Companionway steps so nobody misses the last one in the dark. Under a gunwale for a soft cockpit glow. Cabin corners, galley toe-kicks, the inside of a livewell lid. One light throws a focused pool, so if you're trying to light a whole cockpit evenly, plan on three or four of them spaced out rather than one working overtime. That's the honest answer. A single SCM-CL is an accent, not a floodlight, and spacing a few of them is what gives you that even, built-in look.

One more real-world note. The white housing can yellow a touch faster than the black under hard UV, so if your boat lives uncovered in strong sun, the black cover ages more gracefully. Small thing, but it's the kind of detail that matters three summers in. And because it draws so little, you can leave a courtesy light on all night at anchor and not worry about your batteries in the morning. For a light this size and this price, the SCM-CL gives you a lot. Sealed, low-draw, good-looking, and flexible enough to wire into just about any DC system on your boat.
