Sea-Dog SD-87 40A 48V DC Circuit Breaker | 830452 — Product description

The Sea-Dog SD-87 is a 40-amp resettable circuit breaker built to sit right on your DC panel and protect a heavy circuit up to 48 volts. Manual reset, IP66 sealed against spray, and stud terminals that take a proper ring lug. It's the breaker you reach for when a fuse just won't cut it anymore.

The Sea-Dog SD-87 is a panel-mount resettable circuit breaker rated at 40 amps and 48 volts DC. It's the kind of protection you wire in when a circuit pulls too much current to trust to a cheap inline fuse. Windlasses, bow thrusters, inverter feeds, electric reels, trolling motor circuits. Anything that draws hard and occasionally trips deserves a breaker you can reset by hand instead of a fuse you have to dig a spare out for.

It's a manual reset design. When the breaker trips, a button pops and stays out until you push it back in. No mystery, no hunting through the fuse box in a rolling sea. You see the popped button, you clear the fault, you reset it. That's the whole point of running a breaker over a fuse on a critical circuit.

The body is sealed to IP66, so it shrugs off deck spray and washdown. That matters if you're mounting it anywhere near an open helm or in a locker that gets damp. The 5/16 inch-18 stud terminals take a proper ring lug, which is how you want a 40-amp connection made. Crimp your lugs, torque the nuts, and you've got a connection that won't back out with engine vibration.

Panel mounting is straightforward. The breaker drops through a single hole and the stud terminals do the securing from behind. The black plastic housing keeps it low profile on the dash. It meets SAE J553, ABYC-E11, UL1077, and SAE J1171 standards, so it's built to the marine ignition-protection and wiring rules a surveyor cares about.

One thing to get right before you order: match the amperage to the wire, not the load. A 40-amp breaker protects wiring sized for 40 amps. If you're not sure what gauge you're running or what the circuit actually draws, give us a call and we'll size it with you. Getting this wrong is how you cook a harness, and it's an easy thing to get right up front.

Frequently asked questions

What's the SD-87 rated for?

40 amps at 48 volts DC. It's a resettable breaker, so it protects the circuit and lets you reset by hand instead of swapping a fuse.

Is it a manual or automatic reset?

Manual. When it trips, a button pops out and stays out. You clear the fault, then push the button back in to restore the circuit.

Can I mount it at an open helm?

Yes. The housing is sealed to IP66, so it handles deck spray and washdown. It's a panel-mount breaker that drops through a single hole.

What terminals does it use?

5/16 inch-18 studs. Crimp a ring lug onto your wire, slip it over the stud, and torque the nut down. That's the right way to make a 40-amp connection.

Does it meet marine standards?

It's built to SAE J553, ABYC-E11, UL1077, and SAE J1171. Those are the wiring and ignition-protection standards a surveyor looks for.

How do I pick the right amperage?

Size the breaker to the wire, not the load. A 40-amp breaker protects wiring rated for 40 amps. If you're unsure of your gauge, call us and we'll size it with you.
