Sea-Dog SD-87 200A Circuit Breaker 48V DC | 830462 — Product description

The Sea-Dog SD-87 is a 200-amp resettable circuit breaker built to protect high-current DC circuits on your boat. Manual reset, panel mount, rated to 48 volts DC, and sealed to IP66 so it shrugs off spray and washdown. It's the breaker you reach for on windlass, thruster, and inverter runs.

The Sea-Dog SD-87 is a 200-amp resettable circuit breaker made for the heavy-current DC circuits that keep bigger boats running. Think windlass, bow thruster, inverter, or a high-output charger feed. These are the runs where a blown fuse leaves you stuck at the worst moment, and where you want a breaker you can reset by hand instead of digging through the spares box.

It's rated to 200 amps at up to 48 volts DC, so it covers 12-volt and 24-volt house systems with plenty of headroom, and it's right at home on 48-volt setups too. The manual reset is the part boaters like. If the circuit trips, you find the fault, then push the breaker back in. No fuse to replace, no fumbling in a locker with cold hands.

Sea-Dog built this one to take abuse. The housing is sealed to an IP66 protection rating, which means it holds up to dust and heavy spray, so you can mount it in an engine room, a lazarette, or anywhere it'll catch the occasional washdown. It carries the marine and safety standards that matter for this kind of hardware: SAE J553, ABYC-E11, UL1077, and SAE J1171. If you're wiring to ABYC, this is the right class of part.

Installation is panel mount. The power connections are 5/16 inch-18 stud terminals, so you're landing proper ring terminals and torquing them down, not trusting a friction fit on a 200-amp run. That's how it should be at this current. The black plastic housing keeps things low-profile and won't corrode like a bare metal case would.

One thing to know: this is a single breaker, sold on its own. Size it to your circuit. The breaker should protect the wire, so match the 200-amp rating to your cable gauge and the load it feeds. Not sure what you need? Give us a shout and we'll help you spec it against your windlass or thruster draw. Getting the breaker, the wire, and the load matched is the whole game with DC protection.

Frequently asked questions

What circuits is a 200 amp breaker meant for?

High-draw DC runs. Windlasses, bow and stern thrusters, inverters, and high-output charger feeds are the usual candidates. Size the breaker to protect the wire feeding that load.

Can I use it on a 12 or 24 volt system?

Yes. It's rated to 48 volts DC, so it works on 12-volt and 24-volt marine systems with plenty of margin, and on 48-volt systems too.

What does manual reset mean?

If the breaker trips on an overload, it stays open until you push it back in by hand. You find and fix the fault first, then reset. There's no fuse to carry as a spare or swap out.

Is it waterproof?

It's sealed to an IP66 rating, so it stands up to dust and strong jets of water like a washdown. That covers engine rooms, lazarettes, and spray-prone spots. It isn't rated for full submersion.

What size wire terminals does it use?

The power studs are 5/16 inch-18. Use properly sized ring terminals crimped to your cable and torque them down. Friction connections don't belong on a 200-amp circuit.

Does it meet ABYC standards?

Yes. It's built to ABYC-E11 along with SAE J553, UL1077, and SAE J1171, so it's the right class of part for an ABYC-compliant install.
