Sea-Dog SD-17 150A Circuit Breaker 48V | 830199 — Product description

The Sea-Dog SD-17 is a 150-amp resettable thermal circuit breaker built to protect the big DC loads on your boat. Rated to 48 volts DC with a switchable manual reset, it doubles as an on/off switch and carries the standards a surveyor actually looks for.

The Sea-Dog SD-17 is a resettable thermal circuit breaker built to protect a heavy DC circuit on your boat. It's rated for 150 amps at up to 48 volts DC, so it covers the big loads: bow thrusters, windlasses, inverters, and main battery feeds where you want real overcurrent protection close to the source.

This one's a panel-mount breaker with a manual, switchable reset. That means it doubles as an on/off switch. Flip it to cut power to the circuit for service, flip it back to restore it. And if it trips on an overload, you reset it by hand once the fault clears. No fuses to carry, no spares to hunt for in a hatch at the worst possible time.

The terminals are 1/4 inch-28 studs, so you're landing proper ring terminals and torquing them down, not fighting a push-on spade connector on a 150-amp feed. The housing is black plastic with an IP67 protection rating, which means it shrugs off spray and brief immersion. Good for an exposed helm, a console, or a semi-protected battery compartment.

Where it earns its keep is the standards list. It's built to SAE J1625, ABYC E-11, UL 1077, and SAE J1171 requirements. If you've ever had a survey flag a non-compliant breaker, you know that matters. ABYC E-11 is the one your insurance and your surveyor care about for DC systems, and the J1171 ignition-protection standard means it's rated for use near a gas engine compartment.

One sizing note: pick the breaker to protect the wire, not the load. A 150-amp breaker wants wire rated to carry that current safely. If you're not sure what gauge you're running, give us a shout before you wire it in. Getting the breaker, the wire, and the load matched is the whole point.

Sold as a single breaker. It's a straightforward panel-mount install with two stud terminals.

Frequently asked questions

How many amps is the SD-17 rated for?

It's a 150-amp breaker rated for circuits up to 48 volts DC. Match it to a wire gauge that can safely carry 150 amps.

Can I use this breaker as an on/off switch?

Yes. The manual switchable reset lets you flip the circuit off for service and back on when you're done, so it works as a combined breaker and disconnect.

Is it waterproof?

It carries an IP67 protection rating, so it handles spray and brief immersion. It's fine at an exposed helm, in a console, or in a semi-protected battery compartment.

What size are the terminals?

The SD-17 uses 1/4 inch-28 stud terminals. You land ring terminals over the studs and torque them down, which is what you want on a 150-amp feed.

Is it ignition protected?

Yes. It's built to the SAE J1171 ignition-protection standard, so it's rated for use around a gas engine compartment.

Does it meet ABYC standards?

It's built to ABYC E-11 along with SAE J1625, UL 1077, and SAE J1171. ABYC E-11 is the DC systems standard your surveyor and insurer look for.
