Sea-Dog 316 Stainless Anti-Rattle Latch, Surface Mount — Product description

The Sea-Dog anti-rattle latch is a surface-mount 316 stainless steel latch for cabinets, doors, and hatches. It draws the door tight against its frame so nothing chatters underway, and a built-in locking hole lets you padlock a locker when you need to.

Anybody who's spent a night at anchor knows the sound. A cabinet door tapping its frame with every passing wake, all night long. The Sea-Dog anti-rattle latch is built to shut that up for good. It's a surface-mount latch machined from 316 stainless steel, the marine grade that shrugs off salt spray and keeps its finish season after season.

The whole point of an anti-rattle latch is tension. Instead of just holding a door closed, it draws the door snug against its frame and keeps it there. So when you're pounding through a chop or rolling at anchor, your cabinet and hatch doors stay quiet and stay shut. No chatter. No drawer swinging open on a beam sea.

It mounts to the surface, which makes it a straightforward retrofit. You're not cutting a deep mortise or routing out the door edge. Bolt the two halves to the face of the door and the frame, line them up, and you're done. That surface-mount design makes it a good fit for cabinets, lockers, and hatches on boats where the woodwork's already finished and you'd rather not tear it apart to add hardware.

There's a locking hole built into the latch, so you can run a small padlock through it to secure a locker or hatch. The padlock isn't included, but the provision's there when you want it. Handy for the anchor locker, a battery compartment, or anywhere you'd rather keep things buttoned up and out of reach.

Dimensionally it's compact. 3 inches long, 1-1/2 inches wide, 3/4 inch deep. Small enough to tuck onto a tight cabinet edge without looking bulky, and the low-profile stainless body sits clean against wood or fiberglass. This one ships as a single latch, so count your doors and hatches before you order. And because it's 316 stainless all the way through, not plated steel, it'll hold up in the cockpit, the head, or anywhere the salt air finds its way in.

Frequently asked questions

What is this latch made of?

316 stainless steel, all the way through rather than plated. That's the marine grade that stands up to salt spray and holds its finish in the cockpit, the head, or anywhere salt air gets to it.

How does an anti-rattle latch keep doors quiet?

It works on tension. Instead of just holding the door closed, it draws the door snug against its frame and holds it there, so the door can't tap or chatter when you're running through a chop or rolling at anchor.

Is this surface mount or flush mount?

Surface mount. The two halves bolt to the face of the door and the frame, so you don't need to cut a deep mortise or rout the door edge. That makes it a clean retrofit on finished woodwork.

Can I lock it?

There's a locking hole built into the latch, so you can run a small padlock through it to secure a locker or hatch. The padlock isn't included, but the provision is there when you want it.

What are the dimensions?

It measures 3 inches long, 1-1/2 inches wide, and 3/4 inch deep. Compact enough to tuck onto a tight cabinet edge without looking bulky.

Where can I use it?

Cabinets, doors, and hatches. It's a good fit for cabinets, lockers, anchor lockers, and battery compartments anywhere on the boat.

How many latches come in the package?

This ships as a single latch, so count your doors and hatches before you order.
