Scanstrut DS-HSL-01 Horizontal Cable Seal IP68 Gray

The Scanstrut DS-HSL-01 is a horizontal cable seal that gets your wiring through a deck, transom, or bulkhead without letting water follow it inside. It's the gray one, sized to pass cables from 0.07 to 0.31 inches across and connectors up to 0.62 inches. If you've ever fished a cable through a hole and then spent the rest of the afternoon worrying about whether the caulk would hold, this is the part that puts an end to that worry. It seals at the surface and at the cable, so you're not trusting a bead of sealant to do the whole job by itself.

A lot of boaters reach for this exact seal when they add Starlink to the boat. That dish cable ends in a molded connector that's too fat for a standard gland, and cutting it off to fit isn't an option you want to take. The DS-HSL-01 uses split bungs, so you feed the pre-terminated connector straight through the seal, close the bung around the cable, and you're sealed up. No cutting, no re-terminating, no field crimp you have to trust once you're out on the water. Feed it, close it, done.

The seal carries an IP68 rating, which means it's built to keep water out under pressure and not just shrug off a light splash. Behind the gray cover sits a waterproof 3M gasket that beds against the mounting surface, and the split bungs clamp down on the cable itself. Water gets stopped at two points, the gasket at the surface and the bung at the cable, and that's exactly the redundancy you want on a hull that pounds through chop all day long. One seal fails, the other's still holding.

The HSL in the part number is the horizontal version. It's made for vertical surfaces, a transom, the side of a console, a hardtop leg, anywhere the cable runs in sideways instead of dropping straight down through a flat deck. The low profile keeps it from snagging sheets or dock lines, and it looks like it belongs there rather than something bolted on after the fact. If your run comes in horizontally, this is the shape you want instead of forcing a top-entry gland to work sideways.

Scanstrut ships it with 316 stainless steel fixings, the grade that actually holds up around saltwater instead of weeping rust streaks after a single season. The body is UV-stable plastic in gray, so it sits well against most gelcoat and nonskid and doesn't chalk yellow on you the first summer. It's a single-cable seal, one cable per unit, but there's nothing stopping you from mounting several of them in a neat row when you've got a bundle of separate runs to bring through the same panel.

Installation is about as simple as marine work gets. Drill your pass-through to size, feed the cable and its connector, seat the split bung around the cable, then screw the cover down over the 3M gasket. On a curved surface like a flybridge coaming, bed the gasket edge with a little marine sealant for extra insurance against flex. And a dab of anti-seize on the stainless screws now means they'll back out easily years down the road when you're chasing a wiring change. Call it twenty minutes at the helm, start to finish.

One thing worth checking before you order is your connector size. The seal passes connectors up to 0.62 inches, which covers most NMEA drops, coax ends, USB leads, and the standard Starlink cable plug. If you're bringing an oversized radar or AIS plug through, measure it first, because anything larger than 0.62 inches won't clear the bung cleanly and you'll be better served by a bigger seal from the range. Measure once, order once, and you'll save yourself a return.

So who's it for? Anybody sealing a single cable pass-through the right way. It's the correct part for NMEA 2000 drops, transducer and sensor leads, antenna coax, power runs, and of course that Starlink cable. It isn't a structural clamp and it isn't meant to carry the weight of a heavy cable run, so support the cable inside the hull the way you normally would. But for sealing one pass-through and letting a finished connector through without surgery, it's hard to do cleaner. Scanstrut lists it as SCA certified too, so it's the same standard of seal the pros spec on new rigs.
