RAILBLAZA built the StarPort HD for boaters who are tired of drilling a fresh set of holes every time they want to add a piece of gear. The HD in the name is the important part. This is the reinforced version of the standard StarPort, molded from UV-stabilized fiberglass-reinforced plastic rather than plain resin. That matters when you're loading it with a rod under a running fish or an arm holding a camera out over the water at speed. The base takes the load without flexing the way a lighter mount would. And the black finish isn't just cosmetic. Black hides the slow yellowing that UV throws at plastic over the years, so a base mounted on an open bow still looks right three seasons in.

What can you hang off it? The short answer is anything in the StarPort accessory range, which is deep. Rod holders are the obvious one, and they're what most anglers buy the base for. But the same socket takes camera mounts, so you can run an action camera off the gunwale for hero shots or to document a release. Add a nav light, a bait board, a phone mount, a cutting board. Because the accessories share the one fitting, you can move a single tool between multiple bases around the boat. Put a base at the bow, one at the console, one at the transom, and swap gear to wherever you need it that day.

Install is straightforward, but a few notes save you grief. The base ships with M5 by 20 millimeter machine screws, washers, and nylon lock nuts, which is the right hardware for through-bolting a typical fiberglass gunwale or deck. Whenever you can, through-bolt it with a backing plate or a large fender washer underneath. That spreads the load and keeps the base from working loose under a heavy rod. On thicker gunwales, over about three quarters of an inch, you may want longer bolts than the ones in the box. And on an aluminum jon boat where you can't reach behind the panel, self-tapping fasteners into solid metal are the way to go instead of the supplied machine screws. Tighten the nylon nuts firmly but don't crush the base. Snug is plenty.

One honest note. This is a mounting base, not the accessory itself. You're buying the socket and the hardware to fix it down. The rod holder, camera mount, or light you want to run in it is a separate purchase from the StarPort range. If you already own StarPort accessories, they'll drop straight in. If you're starting fresh, plan on adding at least the base and one accessory to get on the water.
