Polyform G-3 Twin Eye Boat Fender 5.5" x 19" Graphite

The Polyform G-3 is a twin-eye cylinder fender built to keep your hull off the dock, the pilings, and the boat rafted up next to you. It measures 5-1/2 inches across and 19 inches long, and Polyform sizes it for boats in the 15 to 20 foot range. That covers a lot of the water out there. Center consoles, bowriders, small cuddies, aluminum fishing boats, and pontoons all fall right in that window.

Polyform's G Series is the most popular utility fender they make, and for good reason. These are the ones you see hanging off the rail at just about every marina. The G-3 carries the same design the whole series is known for: even wall thickness so the fender squashes evenly under load instead of collapsing on one side, and molded ribs that add strength and help the fender stand off the hull. That standoff matters. A fender that flattens out lets your gelcoat kiss the dock, and that's exactly what you're trying to avoid.

The twin-eye design is what makes this one so easy to live with. There's a molded eye on each end, so you can run a line straight through and hang the fender vertically, or rig a line to both eyes and hang it horizontally along the rub rail. Vertical is the go-to for fixed docks and pilings. Horizontal is what you want when you're rafting up to another boat or laying against a long floating dock. Same fender, two ways to hang it, and you decide at the cleat.

This one's finished in graphite, a dark metallic gray that hides scuffs and dock grime far better than a white fender does. If you've ever scrubbed black piling marks off a white fender at the end of the season, you'll appreciate that. The color runs through the vinyl, so a scratch doesn't show a different shade underneath.

Construction is marine-grade PVC. Polyform has been making buoys and fenders longer than most of us have been boating, and their reputation for holding air and shrugging off UV is well earned. The G-3 arrives ready to hang. On the larger G Series sizes Polyform adds an inflation valve so you can top them off over the years, and every size in the series gets reinforced ropeholds so the eyes don't tear out under a hard surge. That's the part that fails first on cheaper fenders, and it's the part Polyform reinforces.

How many do you need? The old rule still holds. Carry at least three fenders, and figure roughly one for every 10 feet of boat, with a spare or two for the side you didn't plan on. For a 17 or 18 foot boat, a set of these G-3s down the working side will handle most docking. Hang them at the widest part of the hull first, that's where you'll make contact, then adjust the height so they ride between the rub rail and the dock at your normal waterline.

A few things this fender is not. It's a single fender, not a pair, so order the count you actually need for both sides. And while the 5.5 inch diameter is plenty for a trailerable boat, if you run something heavier or longer than 20 feet you'll want to step up to a larger G Series size for more standoff. Match the fender to the boat and it'll do its job for years.

Care is simple. Rinse the salt and grit off now and then so the ribbed surface doesn't grind grit into your hull, and check the ropeholds and your fender lines at the start of each season. Store them out of direct sun over the winter if you can. Do that and a set of Polyform fenders will outlast a couple of boats.
