The optics are where it earns its keep. Free Form lens reflector technology takes the 55W halogen output and spreads it into a wide, even wash instead of a narrow hot spot. Installation is straightforward, but it rewards a little patience. Because it's flush, you're cutting a hole in the hardtop for the housing, so measure twice and match your cutout to the template before the hole saw touches gelcoat. On fiberglass, bed the lamp with a polyurethane marine sealant. Plain silicone tends to let go after a season or two and lets water track down into the headliner or the cabin, and a leak directly above your helm is exactly the kind of headache you don't want. Seat it right the first time and it stays dry for years.

A couple of honest notes from folks who've lived with these. Halogen runs hot, so keep the lamp clear of canvas, fuel fills, and anything else that doesn't love heat. The white housing can pick up stains on a hard-working boat, so an occasional wipe-down keeps it looking sharp up top. There's no switch built into the lamp, so plan to run it off a helm switch or tie it into your existing deck light circuit. And if you ever want to trim the amp draw or stretch bulb life in rough water, where filament vibration is tough on a halogen, an LED replacement bulb in the same H3 base is an easy upgrade you can do down the road.

The 180 degree rotation lets you point the beam right where the work is, and the 12 foot cable gives you room to reach a switch or panel without splicing in an extension on most installs. That flexibility matters when your mounting spot and your work area don't line up perfectly, which on a real boat is most of the time.
