The Jabsco 6400-0004 is a pulley-driven bronze flexible impeller pump built for hard marine duty. It moves up to 62 gallons a minute at 1,750 RPM through 1-1/4-inch NPT ports, self-primes, and runs in either direction. Bronze body, 316 stainless shaft, neoprene impeller. Rig it for engine cooling, washdown, bilge duty, or general liquid transfer.

The Jabsco 6400-0004 is a workhorse. It's a bronze flexible impeller pedestal pump, pulley driven, the kind of pump you bolt down and forget about because it just keeps moving water year after year. There's no electric motor built in. You drive it off a belt and pulley from your engine or an external power source, and that's exactly why it holds up to continuous, heavy-duty work that would cook a small 12-volt pump in an afternoon.

At 1,750 RPM it moves up to 62 gallons a minute. Back it down to 1,500 RPM and you're still pushing around 44 gallons a minute. That's real volume. The 1-1/4-inch NPT internal ports feed it and clear it fast, and because it's self-priming it'll pull water up out of the bilge or over the side without you babying it. It draws a lift of about 10 feet, so mounting height isn't much of a worry on most boats. Straight hose runs help it breathe. Tight 90-degree elbows on the discharge will rob you of some flow, so plumb it as directly as you can.

The body is marine-grade bronze. The shaft is 316 stainless steel. Inside is a neoprene flexible impeller riding against a full cam, sealed with a carbon and ceramic mechanical seal. It ships as a pedestal-mount pump with an exposed shaft, ready for you to fit a pulley and belt, so you'll need a drive source and a solid mount. Keep continuous operating pressure at or below 30 psi and the pump will last. And like any flexible impeller pump, don't run it dry. The impeller leans on the pumped liquid for lubrication, so a dry run of more than a few seconds will chew it up fast. If you winterize or lay the boat up for the season, back the impeller out or at least crack the cover plate so it doesn't take a set over the off-season.

Service is refreshingly simple. The impeller is a wear item, and when flow drops off it's almost always the impeller. Pop the cover plate, pull the old one, slide a fresh neoprene impeller in with a little glycerin, and you're back in business in about fifteen minutes at the dock. The whole job needs nothing more than a screwdriver and a new impeller kit. Keep a spare impeller and a cover gasket aboard and you'll never be stuck out there.
