Hella X-Treme XT-4A Amber LED Spotlight, Set of 2

This is a matched pair of Hella X-Treme XT-4A spotlights, sold as a set of two with an amber lens. Each lamp packs 40 LEDs behind a 4.25 inch cube housing, pulls 60 watts, and throws a 7100 lumen spot beam. They run on anything from 12 to 24 volts DC, so the same pair works on a boat's house bank or a 24 volt commercial rig without any changes.

The amber lens is the whole point of this version. White light bounces straight back at you off fog, spray, and dust, and that glare-back is what wrecks your night vision when you need it most. Amber cuts through that soup. If you run inlets before dawn, work a foggy harbor, or push through spray on a fast center console, an amber spot gives you a cleaner picture of what's actually ahead. It's the same reason fog lights have run amber for decades.

Hella builds the X-Treme line to their fit-and-forget standard, and it shows. The housing is black aluminum, which sheds heat and stands up to salt far better than plastic-bodied work lights. The lens is polycarbonate, so it takes a knock without cracking. And because a spot lens spends most of its life pointed at whatever the weather throws at it, Hella includes two smoked stone shield covers in the box. Snap them on when the lights are off and the lens stays protected from UV, salt film, and flying debris on the trailer.

About that 7100 lumen rating. That's real output from a 40 LED array, and it's plenty to pick out a channel marker or a dock well before you're on top of it. Running a matched pair instead of a single light matters more than people expect. Two lights balance the throw across your bow, kill the shadows a single off-center lamp leaves behind, and give you a spare if one ever takes a hit. That's why Hella sells the XT-4A as a set.

Install is straightforward. Each light ships with its own upright mounting bracket and the hardware to bolt it down, plus mounting instructions. The 12 to 24 volt input means you don't have to match a specific system voltage, but do run the right wire gauge for the length of your run so you don't lose brightness to voltage drop. One tip from years of rigging lights on saltwater boats: put a dab of dielectric grease under the mounting feet and on the fasteners. Aluminum and stainless hardware sitting in salt air will seize and corrode over time, and that little step keeps the next removal easy.

Where do these earn their keep? T-tops and hardtops on fishing boats, bow-mounted for spotting crab pots or a mooring at night, and up on the cabin roof of a trawler for close-quarters docking. Because they take 12 to 24 volts, plenty of folks also run them on overland trucks, utility vehicles, and work equipment where an amber spot cuts dust on a job site. One pair covers a lot of ground.

Two things to keep in mind. First, this is a spot beam, not a flood. It's built to throw light a long way down a defined cone, which is exactly what you want for distance and spotting. If you also need a wide wash of light right in front of the boat for close work, plan on a separate pair of floods for that job. Second, wiring isn't included. You'll supply your own switch, fuse, and cable sized to the run, which is standard for a light of this class. Wire them through a fused switch at the helm and you're set for the season.
