Hella Marine built its name on switches and lamps you can wire in once and forget about. This is one of their oval rocker switches, a simple on-off unit with a green LED built right into the face. Flip it on and the green glow tells you the circuit is live at a glance, even from across a dark cockpit. It's the kind of small part that quietly does its job for years without asking for attention.

The switch is a straightforward on-off design. One position energizes the circuit, the other cuts it. There's no momentary action and no second load position to think about. So it's a clean fit for anything you want to turn on and leave on. A bilge pump running on manual, a set of courtesy lights, a livewell pump, a stereo, or an accessory feed at the dash all work well here. Plenty of installers prefer the bare switch anyway, since they've got their own labeling scheme or they're dropping it into a pre-printed panel.

Where does a switch like this actually live on a boat? All over. Anglers use them for aerator and livewell pumps, for deck wash pumps, and for the LED light bars they've added to a T-top. Cruisers wire them to cabin lights, a fresh water pump, or a charging circuit at the nav station. Anywhere you've got a 12 volt load within the switch's rating and you want a positive on-off with a glowing tell-tale, this fits.

The green LED earns a quick word. Green reads as on and go to just about everyone, so it's a natural choice for circuits you want quick confirmation on. Because it's an LED and not an old incandescent bulb, the current draw is tiny and there's no filament to shake loose after a few seasons of pounding across chop. A quick note on picking the right switch for the job. Match the load to the switch, not the other way around. Add up the current the device pulls and make sure it stays within what the switch is rated to carry, and always protect the circuit with a properly sized fuse or breaker ahead of the switch. For heavier loads like a windlass or a big pump, run the switch to a relay and let the relay carry the current. Do that and a small on-off rocker like this one will outlast most of the gear it controls.
