Any time you're running stainless fasteners into a mount that sees spray, a dab of dielectric grease on the threads keeps them from seizing and makes the next removal painless. Route your wiring so the connections sit somewhere dry and serviceable, not buried where you can't reach them. And run the leads cleanly back to a switched, fused circuit so you can kill the lamp from the helm.

Going with LEDs here is the easy call. Six LEDs pulling 18 watts give you real usable light for very little draw on the house bank, which matters when you're at anchor overnight and every amp counts. LEDs also shrug off the constant pounding and vibration that kills filament bulbs on a boat, and they light instantly with no warm-up. Less heat, less current, and nothing to burn out mid-season.

Think about where an even flood earns its keep. Night fishing off the transom, you want the whole cockpit lit so you're not casting shadows over the cutting board. Backing down a ramp in the dark, a flood on the aft rail shows you the trailer and the bunks. One thing to keep in mind on the layout. A flood throws a wide pattern, so mount it where the light falls on the deck and not back into your eyes at the helm on an open boat. Point it at the job, keep it below your sightline, and it earns its spot fast.
