Garmin Signal VHF 220 Marine Radio with Built-In AIS Receiver

The Signal VHF 220 is Garmin's compact take on the fixed-mount marine radio, and the headline feature is the built-in Class B AIS receiver. Flip it on and you'll see the range, course, speed, and crossing situation of other AIS-equipped boats around you, right on the radio itself. That's real situational awareness at the helm without bolting on a separate box.

Worth being clear on one point up front: the 220 is an AIS receiver, not a transponder. It shows you other AIS boats, but it doesn't broadcast your own position back to them. If you need to be seen on AIS as well as see others, that's the job of the Signal VHF 400 with its Class B transponder. For a lot of boaters, receive-only is exactly the right call and it keeps the cost down.

The face is a 3.5-inch color touchscreen, capacitive glass at 640 by 480 pixels, and it drives to 1,000 nits so you can still read it in direct sun. The whole unit is edge-to-edge glass and takes up very little dash space. If your helm is tight, and most center consoles are, that matters. The AIS plotter view lets you tap a target to see who it is and, if the target supports DSC, call them directly with a button press.

Communication is where a VHF earns its keep, and this one's clean. Adaptive noise cancellation uses machine-learning to strip out wind, wave, and engine noise so the other boat actually hears you. Auto squelch kills the static without you riding the knob. Miss a call? VHF audio playback lets you replay the last few minutes on any channel, up to three minutes of recorded audio. Dual and tri-watch keep you on channel 16 and your presets at the same time, and the radio scans everything in the background.

The safety features are all here. The dedicated distress button fires a Class D DSC alert that automatically sends your position and identity to nearby vessels and emergency responders. You get NOAA weather alerts and weather watch, AIS collision and man-overboard alarms, plus a loud hailer with listen-back for talking to the foredeck or the dock. Program your MMSI and pull over-the-air software updates through the ActiveCaptain app over the built-in Wi-Fi.

Install is genuinely simple by VHF-with-AIS standards. The GPS antenna and receiver are built into the head unit, so there's no separate puck to mount for basic operation. VHF, DSC, and AIS all share a single VHF antenna through the built-in splitter. One thing to plan for: the head unit wants about 4 inches of depth clearance behind the dash, which is worth checking on smaller runabouts before you cut the hole. For chartplotter overlay, run it on your NMEA 2000 backbone with good terminators, and it talks natively to Garmin BlueNet and the Marine Network.

The included fist mic has a built-in speaker, so your audio isn't stuck at the dash, and a sun cover comes in the box to keep UV off the glass when the boat's on the trailer or the mooring. Everything runs on 9.6 to 32 volts, so it's happy on both 12 and 24-volt systems, and the head unit is rated IPX7 for the splash and spray that come with the territory.

Who's this for? Anyone upgrading an older VHF who wants AIS receive, DSC, and a modern touchscreen without stacking three separate devices at the helm. It pairs cleanly with Garmin 74xx and 76xx series plotters for target overlay, and on bigger boats a remote mic and repeater setup extends it to a flybridge. It does draw a bit more on receive than a bare-bones radio, so factor that into your overnight anchor-watch battery math and you'll be set.
