Edson Brake Maintenance Kit — Product description

The Edson Brake Maintenance Kit relines the wheel brake on your Edson steering pedestal so the helm holds where you set it. Two bronze brake legs with fresh pads, plus the bushing, washer, cotter pin, and instructions you need to make the whole job in one sitting.

If you run an Edson pedestal on your sailboat, the wheel brake is one of those parts you never think about until it stops holding. You set the wheel, step away to trim a sheet, and the helm starts to creep. That's the brake pads worn down to nothing, and this kit puts it right.

The Edson wheel brake works just like the brake on your car. A friction pad clamps against the drum inside the pedestal to lock the wheel in place. After enough seasons of clamping and releasing, those pads wear thin and the bronze legs that carry them get sloppy. Relining is normal maintenance, not a repair you should dread.

Everything you need is in the box. Two bronze brake legs come with fresh brake pads already fitted. You also get the cotter pin, the stainless steel washer, and the nylon bushing that all go back together during reassembly, plus Edson's own removal and installation instructions. So you're not stuck hunting for a bushing at the hardware store halfway through the job.

It's a job most owners can handle right at the dock with hand tools. Pull the old legs, drop in the new ones, reset the bushing and washer, pin it, and you're back in business. The printed instructions walk you through the sequence so nothing goes back in the wrong order. Take an hour on a calm afternoon and your helm holds like new again.

Not sure it's time yet? The tell is simple. A healthy brake locks the wheel firmly and holds it against the pull of the rudder. If you have to crank the brake knob hard and the wheel still drifts, or you hear the pedestal groan under load, the pads are done. Better to reline now than to lose the helm hold when you're offshore.

One thing worth knowing. This is the genuine Edson service kit, sized to the brake assembly Edson builds into their pedestals. Don't try to substitute generic brake pads. The friction material and the leg geometry are matched to the drum, and a mismatched pad either won't hold or chews up the drum. If you're not sure which brake your pedestal uses, send us your pedestal model and we'll confirm the fit before you order.

Frequently asked questions

What does this kit fix?

A worn wheel brake that no longer holds. If your Edson helm creeps after you set it, or you have to crank the brake knob hard and the wheel still drifts, the friction pads are worn out. This kit relines the brake so it locks the wheel again.

What comes in the box?

Two bronze brake legs with brake pads, one cotter pin, one stainless steel washer, one nylon bushing, and Edson's removal and installation instructions. It's everything the reline needs in one kit.

Can I install it myself?

Yes. Most owners handle it at the dock with basic hand tools in about an hour. The printed instructions walk you through pulling the old legs and reassembling in the right order.

Will generic brake pads work instead?

We wouldn't. The friction material and leg geometry are matched to the drum Edson builds into their pedestals. A mismatched pad either won't hold or wears the drum. Stick with the genuine service kit.

How do I know it's time to reline?

A good brake holds the wheel firmly against the pull of the rudder. When the wheel drifts even with the brake set, or the pedestal groans under load, the pads are done.

Will it fit my Edson pedestal?

It's the standard Edson wheel-brake service kit. If you're unsure which brake your pedestal uses, send us your pedestal model and we'll confirm the fit before you order.
