When the afternoon sun turns your rig into an oven, the Dometic FreshJet 4 is built to pull the temperature back down fast. This is a rooftop air conditioner for RVs, travel trailers, and fifth wheels, and it puts out a full 15,000 BTU of cooling for the bigger floor plans that a smaller unit just can't keep up with. This is the white, heat-pump version, so it pulls double duty when the weather turns the other way.

Mount it on top and the whole compressor and condenser package sits outside, which keeps the noise and the bulk off your ceiling and preserves interior headroom. It's designed to fit a standard 14 by 14 inch roof vent opening, the same cutout most trailers already have for a roof vent or a factory AC prep. That means on a lot of rigs you're replacing an existing opening rather than cutting a new hole in the roof, which is the part most owners dread.

The heat pump is the reason to reach for this model over a cooling-only unit. On a chilly morning at the campground or during a shoulder-season trip, it reverses and pushes warm air into the cabin without firing up the propane furnace. It won't replace your furnace when it's well below freezing outside, but for taking the edge off cool nights and mild mornings it saves propane and runs quiet. The compressor pulls its heaviest current the instant it kicks on, and that surge is what trips breakers and makes a generator stumble. The hard start smooths that spike out, so the unit is friendlier to a portable generator and less likely to nuisance-trip a shore power pedestal. It runs on 115 volts with a 15 amp compressor draw, which is standard RV shore power.

Inside the shroud, independent fan and blower motors handle the airflow, which keeps air moving steadily for more even temperatures front to back. The system uses R32 refrigerant, a more efficient and lower-impact charge than the older blends. There's no built-in condensate pump on this model, so it's set up to drain by gravity, which is the norm for a rooftop install with a proper slope. It's a simpler setup with one less part to fail, and as long as your roof carries the runoff away cleanly you won't miss the pump.

Footprint-wise, the exterior unit measures about 26 inches deep, 13.87 inches wide, and 29.63 inches tall, so it's worth checking your total roof clearance for garages and low overpasses once it's mounted. At roughly 77 pounds it's a two-person lift to get it up top, and the roof structure around the opening needs to be solid enough to carry that weight over the long haul.

A couple of things to plan for before you order. You'll need a matching ceiling assembly and control to finish the install for your ducted or non-ducted layout, since the rooftop unit is the outside half of the system.
