The Dometic 8500 is about as common as manual patio awnings get on the side of a travel trailer or motorhome, and there's a good reason for that. It's simple, it's tough, and it does one job well. This is the 18 foot version in Sandstone fade vinyl, and what you're buying here is the roller assembly: the fabric, the roller tube, and the Polar White weathershield that wraps it all up. You crank it out by hand. No motor, no wiring, nothing to draw down your house battery just to throw some shade over the picnic table.

Let's talk about the fabric, because that's what you're really paying for. It's Sandstone fade vinyl, and vinyl is the material we'd point most RVers toward for a patio awning. It sheds water instead of soaking it up, so a light rain runs right off if you pitch one arm a little lower. It wipes clean with soap and water. And it takes the sun well. This one is scratch-resistant with UV protection built into the material, so it holds its color and doesn't get chalky after a couple of seasons the way cheaper fabric can.

The Polar White weathershield is the part a lot of folks overlook until they need it. When the awning's rolled up and you're heading down the highway, that vinyl cover wraps the stowed fabric and keeps road grime, bugs, and UV off it. Your fabric spends most of its life rolled up, so protecting it in transit is half the battle for making it last. The end-cap castings are Polar White to match.

Mechanically, the 8500 uses a rafter lock system with automatic tension. In plain terms, that keeps the arms snug and the fabric taut so it isn't flapping and sagging every time a breeze comes through the campground. A tight awning is a quiet awning, and it sheds water better too.

Now the important part, and we'd rather tell you up front than have you open the box surprised. This is a roller assembly only. The awning arms, the mounting brackets, and the rest of the hardware are not included. Dometic sells this as a replacement fabric-and-roller unit for a rig that already has 8500 series arms mounted to it. So if your existing awning fabric is sun-rotted, torn, or just tired, and the arms are still good, this is exactly the part you want. Pull the old roller, drop this one in, done. If you're starting from a bare wall with no arms at all, you'll need to buy the arm hardware kit separately to complete the setup. Either way, measure your existing rail before you order. The 18 foot spec is the nominal rail length, and the actual fabric runs a few inches shorter, which is normal.

Out at the campsite this earns its keep every day. Shade over the door, a dry spot to stand when you're loading the cooler, somewhere to sit out a passing shower. The manual crank means you're always in control of it, which we actually prefer for a lot of setups. See a storm rolling in or feel the wind pick up? Roll it in by hand in under a minute. That's the one rule with any RV awning. Don't leave it out in gusty wind, and never drive off with it extended.
