Digital Yacht iKreate NMEA 2000 Simulator with USB Interface

If you build, sell, or service marine electronics, the iKreate is the kind of tool you end up wishing you'd bought years ago. Digital Yacht designed it to put a working NMEA 2000 network on your bench without needing a boat, a battery bank, or a single real sensor plugged in. You connect the small iKreate USB interface, open the web app in your browser, and start pushing live NMEA 2000 data down the wire. That's it.

Here's the clever part. The whole simulator is a single HTML5 file, under half a megabyte, that runs right in the browser. There's nothing to install. No driver package, no setup wizard, no license server to phone home. If you can save a file and find it again, you already know how to run it. It works on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, and even a Raspberry Pi running Raspbian, so whatever's already on your bench will do the job. You just need a browser that supports the Web Serial API, which today means Chrome, Chromium, Microsoft Edge, or Opera.

What can you actually do with it? Two big things. First, you can create individual NMEA 2000 PGNs from a drop-down list and fill in the data values yourself. Want to see how a chartplotter reacts to a specific depth, speed, or heading reading? Dial it in and send it. You can build multiple PGN groups, save them for next time, and use the data variance function to make values change over time so the numbers look like they're coming off a moving boat instead of sitting flat.

Second, you can replay a real NMEA 2000 log file. Capture the traffic from an actual boat's network using a Digital Yacht NMEA 2000 product, bring that log back to the bench, and play it back exactly as it happened. That's gold for chasing down an intermittent fault you can't reproduce dockside, or for demonstrating a full instrument display to a customer who's standing in your showroom, not out on the water.

We reach for a tool like this all the time. Commissioning a new build and want to confirm the MFD is reading every instrument before the boat splashes? Simulate the PGNs and watch the screens light up. Training a new tech on how a backbone carries engine, GPS, and depth data all at once? It's far easier to show them on the bench than to tie up a customer's boat for an afternoon. Troubleshooting a network that keeps dropping data? Feed it known-good PGNs and see what actually makes it through. It saves you from hauling a whole boat's worth of gear out to a test rig just to prove a point.

The interface itself is compact and comes with an integrated 0.8m NMEA 2000 cable and a 0.8m USB cable, so it drops straight onto a standard backbone with a tee and a drop cable. There's nothing extra to buy to get it talking. You set the source address and instance right in the app, which keeps it from stepping on the addresses of other devices when you tie it into a live network. And it'll happily read and generate data from any NMEA 2000 system, whatever gear happens to be on it, since PGNs are a shared standard across the whole network.

A couple of things to keep in mind. This is a developer and installer tool, not a plotter or a black box you leave wired into the boat. It really shines on the bench and during commissioning, when you're proving out a system before it ever touches the water. And because it runs through the Web Serial API, you'll want to stick with one of the supported browsers above. Get that part right and it just works, day in and day out.
