Camco Eaz-Lift 48381 Sway Control Kit, Left/Driver Side — Product description

The Camco Eaz-Lift 48381 is a driver-side friction sway control that keeps your travel trailer planted when wind and passing trucks try to push it around. It comes complete with the sway arm, ball, ball plate, and hardware, includes an on-off handle for backing and wet roads, and works right alongside your weight distribution hitch.

Trailer sway is that stomach-dropping wag you feel when a semi blows past on the interstate or a gust catches the side of your travel trailer. The Camco Eaz-Lift 48381 sway control is the simple, proven fix for it. It's a friction bar that mounts between your tow vehicle and trailer and adds resistance to side-to-side movement, so the trailer tracks straight instead of fishtailing behind you.

Here's how it works. The bar clamps to a ball on your hitch and a second ball plate on the trailer A-frame. As the trailer tries to swing left or right, the bar has to slide, and the built-in friction fights that motion. That drag is what settles the trailer down. It's all mechanical, there's nothing electronic to fail, and this design has been keeping rigs planted on the highway for decades.

One of the things we like about the Eaz-Lift setup is the on-off handle. Friction sway control does its best work in a straight line, but you don't want that resistance fighting you when you're backing into a tight site or towing on wet or icy roads. Flip the handle to off and the bar releases so you can maneuver freely, then flip it back on once you're rolling on dry pavement. The friction is adjustable too, so you can dial in more or less bite depending on your trailer weight and how the road's treating you.

This is the left-hand, driver-side version. It mounts on the driver side of the hitch and trailer tongue. A lot of folks run a single bar on one side, and that's plenty for most single-axle and lighter tandem trailers. If you tow something heavy or you're chasing sway in a strong crosswind, you can add a matching bar on the passenger side for balanced control on both sides.

The 48381 comes complete with the sway control arm, the hitch ball, the ball plate, and the mounting hardware, so you've got what you need to get it on the trailer. It's designed to work alongside a weight distribution hitch, which handles the up-and-down load leveling while the sway bar handles the side-to-side. The two jobs are different, and together they make a real difference in how a loaded trailer feels behind the wheel. You'll want to make sure your hitch ball height and coupler line up so the bar sits level and doesn't bind on turns.

Installation is a bolt-on job. The ball plate mounts to the trailer's A-frame, the sway ball threads onto a tab near your main hitch ball, and the bar clips between the two. If your frame doesn't already have a spot for the ball plate, you'll drill and bolt it or have a tab welded on, depending on your setup. Give yourself an afternoon the first time. After that, hooking the bar up and taking it off takes just seconds at each stop.

A quick word on upkeep. A friction bar works by design when the sliding surfaces are clean and the hardware is properly tensioned, so check the bolts after your first few hundred miles and re-torque anything that's backed off. Rough roads and potholes can loosen fasteners over time, so a periodic look-over keeps everything tight. And keep those sliding surfaces free of grease. This is a friction device, and oil is the enemy of friction.

Who's this for? Anybody towing a travel trailer, teardrop, or toy hauler who's tired of the white-knuckle feeling in wind and traffic. It's an easy, affordable upgrade that earns its keep the first time a gust hits and your trailer just stays put. If you're replacing a worn-out Eaz-Lift sway control on the driver side, this is the direct swap. And if it's your first one, it's about as straightforward as trailer gear gets to install and live with.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Eaz-Lift 48381 sway control do?

It's a friction bar that fights side-to-side trailer movement. When wind or a passing truck tries to push your trailer around, the bar adds resistance so the trailer tracks straight instead of swaying behind you.

Which side does the 48381 mount on?

This is the left-hand version, so it mounts on the driver side of your hitch and trailer tongue. There's a matching right-hand unit if you want to run bars on both sides.

What comes in the kit?

You get the sway control arm, the hitch ball, the ball plate, and the mounting hardware. That's everything needed to attach the bar between your tow vehicle and the trailer A-frame.

Do I need a weight distribution hitch to use it?

The sway control is designed to work alongside a weight distribution hitch. The hitch levels the load front to back, and the sway bar handles side to side. They do different jobs, and they're at their best together.

Can I run two sway controls?

Yes. Many folks run a single driver-side bar and it's plenty for lighter trailers. If you tow something heavy or fight a lot of crosswind, adding a matching passenger-side bar gives you balanced control on both sides.

Do I turn it off when backing up?

Yes. Flip the on-off handle to off when you're backing into a site or maneuvering in tight spots, and also on wet or icy roads. Turn it back on once you're rolling on dry pavement.

Is the friction adjustable?

It is. You can dial in more or less friction depending on your trailer's weight and road conditions. Start moderate and add bite if you still feel sway.

Will this replace my old Eaz-Lift sway control?

Yes. If you're replacing a worn Eaz-Lift friction sway control on the driver side, the 48381 is a direct swap. Reuse your existing mounting points where they line up.

How does it attach to the trailer?

The ball plate mounts to the trailer's A-frame and the sway ball threads onto a tab near your main hitch ball. The bar then clips between the two. If your frame doesn't have a mounting spot yet, you'll bolt or weld the plate on depending on your setup.
