Camco 42163 RV Refrigerator Vent Cover, Black — Product description

The Camco 42163 is a replacement refrigerator vent cover in black that drops onto Dometic, Camco, and newer Norcold vent bases. It's the cover only, no solar panel, molded from UV-stabilized polypropylene so it stands up to years of sun and weather. Hardware's included, and you can even cut it to fit a roof-mounted solar panel.

Your RV fridge does a lot of its work up on the roof. Most Dometic and Norcold absorption refrigerators pull heat off the cooling coils and dump it out a roof vent, and that opening needs a cover that keeps rain, leaves, and road grit out while still letting the hot air escape. That's exactly what the Camco 42163 is. It's a replacement refrigerator vent cover in black, and it drops right onto Dometic, Camco, and newer Norcold vent bases.

Here's why the vent even exists. An RV absorption fridge cools by running a heated cycle, and all that heat has to go somewhere. On a lot of rigs it rises up and out the roof vent, right above the fridge. If that path gets blocked or the opening gets sealed up wrong, the fridge runs hot and struggles to hold temperature, especially on a 95-degree afternoon at a full campsite. So the cover's job is a balancing act. Keep the weather out, let the heat out. This one's built to do both.

This is the cover only, without a solar panel. So if your old lid cracked, faded chalky, or blew off somewhere on the interstate, this is the part that gets you sealed back up. It doesn't include the base and it doesn't have an integrated solar panel. If you run a roof-mounted solar setup, though, you're not stuck. The cover can be cut out to make room for a panel, so you can keep your charging gear and still protect the vent opening.

Camco molds it from UV-stabilized polypropylene, which is the part that matters most for something living full-time in the sun. Plain plastic goes brittle and chalky after a couple of summers. UV-stabilized resin holds its color and its flex a lot longer, so the cover doesn't turn into a cracked mess the first time a branch taps it. The shape is a streamlined, low-profile design, so it sits close to the roofline instead of catching wind like a sail up there.

Installation is straightforward, and the mounting hardware is included. You're working over the existing vent base, so there's no cutting into the roof and no wiring to mess with on a standard cover-only swap. Pull the old cover, set the new one over the base, and fasten it down. If you've never been up on the roof before, take your time, spread your weight, and don't step where you can't see a rafter. Most folks knock this out in well under an hour.

Who needs one? Anybody whose factory vent cover has seen better days. Sun, hail, low branches, and highway wind all take a toll up there, and a broken cover lets water find its way toward your fridge and roof structure. It's cheap insurance to keep it in good shape. It's also a smart spare to carry if you camp somewhere with a lot of tree cover or you're headed out on a long trip. The black finish is a clean look if your roof hardware is already dark, or if you just prefer it over white.

One thing to check before you order: this fits Dometic, Camco, and newer Norcold refrigerator vent bases. Older setups used a different base, so match your existing base style before you buy. If your base is cracked too, you'll want to address that separately, since this part is the cover, not the base. Once it's on, it's pretty much maintenance-free, but give it a rinse when you wash the roof, clear off any leaves or pine needles that pile up around it, and glance at the fasteners once a season to make sure nothing's backed out. A five-minute habit like that is what keeps a small part from turning into a soft roof and a warm fridge.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 42163 include a solar panel?

No. This is the vent cover only, without a solar panel. If you run roof-mounted solar, the cover can be cut out to make room for your panel.

What refrigerator vent bases does this cover fit?

It fits Dometic, Camco, and newer Norcold refrigerator vent bases. Older bases used a different style, so match your existing base before ordering.

Does it come with installation hardware?

Yes. The mounting hardware is included, so you can pull the old cover and fasten the new one down over your existing base.

What is the cover made of?

UV-stabilized polypropylene. That's what keeps it from going brittle and chalky after a couple of summers in the sun.

Does this replace the vent base too, or just the cover?

Just the cover. It sits over your existing base. If your base is cracked or damaged, you'll need to address that separately.

Can I still add a solar panel later if I get the cover-only version?

Yes. The cover can be cut out to accommodate a roof-mounted solar panel, so you're not locked out of a solar setup down the road.

What color is it?

Black. It's a clean match if your other roof hardware is dark, and an easy alternative if you'd rather not run white.

Will it hold up parked in the sun for months?

That's what the UV-stabilized polypropylene is for. It holds its color and flex a lot longer than plain plastic, so it stands up to full-time sun exposure.

Why does the RV fridge even need a roof vent cover?

An absorption fridge sheds heat out the roof vent above it. The cover keeps rain and debris out of that opening while still letting the hot air escape, which protects both the fridge and your roof.
