Your rooftop air conditioner pulls cabin air back through a return grille every time it runs, and that grille takes years of dust, hand grease, and UV before anyone thinks about it. Eventually it yellows, cracks, or the little foam filter behind it crumbles into gray fuzz. The Camco 40409 is the honest fix. It's a direct replacement return air grille and foam filter for Dometic air conditioners built with a ducted ceiling assembly, and it gets your airflow, and your cabin, back to clean.

Here's what you get in the package. One white plastic grille and one foam filter. The grille measures 14-1/8 inches long by 7-11/16 inches wide, which is the standard Dometic ducted return opening, and it snaps back into the same spot the old one came out of. No cutting, no new screws, no trip to the hardware store. If your old grille is intact enough to pull down, you already know how the new one goes back up.

The one thing worth checking before you order is whether your unit is actually ducted. On a ducted system the cold air is routed through the ceiling to registers in different parts of the coach, and the A/C control and return grille sit in a rectangular ceiling assembly instead of a big square box hanging off the unit. That's the setup this grille fits. If your air comes straight out of a large square center-of-the-unit shroud with the controls right on it, that's a non-ducted setup and it takes a different grille. When in doubt, drop the old grille and measure the opening. If you're right around 14-1/8 by 7-11/16, you're in the right place.

Installation is a couple of minutes. Pull the old grille down, it usually flexes out of a pair of retaining tabs or thumb screws. Lift the crumbling foam filter out and toss it. Drop the fresh foam filter into the grille, seat the grille back into the ceiling assembly, and you're done. Do it before your first big trip of the season so you start with clean airflow.

The foam filter is the part that does the quiet work. It catches dust, pet hair, and the fine particulates that would otherwise cake up your evaporator coil, and it does it without choking the return, so the blower still moves the air it's rated to move. Better yet, it's washable and reusable. Every few weeks during heavy use, pull it, rinse it in warm soapy water, let it dry fully, and put it back. A clean filter keeps the cabin cooler and takes load off the compressor, which is the expensive part you're really protecting.

One more reason to stay on top of it. A restricted or missing filter lets dust ride straight onto the evaporator coil. Over a season that dust turns into an insulating blanket that drops cooling output and can freeze the coil on humid days. A quick rinse of the foam beats pulling the shroud to clean a fouled coil every time. Keep the grille clean, keep the filter in place, and the whole system runs the way it was built to.

So when do you replace the filter instead of just washing it? When the foam stops springing back after you squeeze it, when it tears, or when a rinse doesn't get it clean anymore. And the grille itself? Replace it when it's cracked, badly discolored, or a tab has broken so it won't seat flush. A grille that hangs crooked lets air bypass the filter, which defeats the whole point.
