Battery Tender 25 ft Quick-Disconnect Charger Extension Lead

Here's the situation this cable was built for. Your battery lives somewhere awkward. Down in the bilge, under the console, back at the transom, buried in a lazarette. And your Battery Tender charger wants to hang somewhere dry and reachable, close to an outlet. The stock lead that comes off the charger only reaches so far. This 25-foot extension lead closes that distance so you don't have to mount the charger in a bad spot or leave the battery half-connected.

It uses the same black quick-disconnect plug that's already on your Battery Tender harness, so it's a plug-and-go job. You snap it inline between the charger's output lead and the ring-terminal or clip lead that stays on the battery. No cutting, no crimping, no splicing into your existing wiring. Pull the charger, add 25 feet of reach, plug it back together, done.

Now the important part, and it's the one thing people get wrong. This lead is made for the black quick-disconnect units. That's the Battery Tender Junior, the Plus, and the 2, 4, 5, and 10-bank chargers. It does not work with the 6-volt Battery Tender Plus, and it does not work with any Battery Tender product that uses the white quick-disconnect plugs. The plug color is the tell. Black to black. If your charger has a white plug, this isn't the extension for it, and forcing it is a good way to make a bad connection. Check the plug color before you order.

On the water, the 25-foot length earns its money on center-console boats where the batteries sit way back at the transom and there's no clean outlet anywhere near them. Run the extension forward to where you can actually plug in the charger, and you maintain the bank without dragging the whole setup to the stern every time. Same story on trawlers and larger cruisers with a separate house and start bank. Mount a multi-bank Battery Tender in the engine room or a dry locker, and let the extension leads reach each battery instead of coiling the charger up next to a wet bilge.

A little honesty, because that's how we do it. Twenty-five feet is a real run, and a small charger like the Junior is only putting out so much current to begin with. Over a long lead you'll see a little voltage drop. It won't stop the battery from maintaining, but if you're relying on it to bring a deeply drained battery back up, it's worth checking the voltage right at the battery terminals the first time rather than trusting the light on the charger from across the boat. On the bigger multi-bank units it's a non-issue for normal float and maintenance duty.

If you're routing this through a bilge or an engine bay, do yourself a favor at the connection points. A shot of dielectric grease in the quick-disconnect plug keeps corrosion from creeping into the contacts, and a length of heat-shrink over the joint keeps spray and moisture out. Marine spaces are hard on any electrical connection, and these plugs are no exception. Pre-run the cable and figure out your path before you make the final hookup, because 25 feet of lead is a lot easier to route before everything's buttoned up than after.

There's a shorter 6-foot version of this same lead if you only need to clear a few feet. Go with the 25-foot when the charger and the battery are genuinely far apart, or when you want the flexibility to mount the charger once and reach several batteries around the boat without moving it. For most center-console and cruiser installs, the extra length is the difference between a clean permanent setup and a charger that's always in the way.

Who's this for? Anybody with a Battery Tender and a battery that's a pain to reach. Boaters, sure, but it's just as at home on a bike in the back of the garage, a classic car under a cover, a tractor, or an RV parked for the season. What it's not: it's not a charger, and it's not an AC extension cord for the wall side. It extends the low-voltage side, from the charger out to the battery. And it's not for white-plug or 6-volt units. Get the plug color right and it's one of the simplest, most useful accessories you can add to a Battery Tender setup.
